As a movie buff with a soft spot for comedies that push the boundaries of parody, I can’t help but be overjoyed at the news that Josh Gad is working on a sequel to the classic Mel Brooks masterpiece, Spaceballs. Having grown up watching this hilarious spoof of Star Wars and other sci-fi classics, it feels like a dream come true to know that the legend himself, Mel Brooks, is involved in the production of Spaceballs 2.

Star of Frozen and Beauty and the Beast, Josh Gad, has confirmed that he is still actively involved in a sequel to the classic Mel Brooks comedy, Spaceballs. During a recent event at Fan Expo Canada in Toronto, Gad subtly announced this thrilling news. Additionally, he shared what Brooks himself told him about his script for Spaceballs 2… (Source: Collider and @AgentsFandom)

“Josh, you’ve got your finger on the pulse.”

Originally launched in 1987, the movie “Spaceballs” was jointly written, produced, and directed by Mel Brooks. It humorously targets the Star Wars series along with other popular science fiction themes. The cast includes Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, and Daphne Zuniga. The story unfolds in a distant galaxy on the planet Spaceballs, where rogue space pilot Lone Starr and his mixed-species companion, Barf (half man, half dog), set out to save Princess Vespa who has been abducted by the wicked Dark Helmet.

Currently, Gad is involved in the production of “Spaceballs 2,” collaborating closely with Amazon MGM Studios. The legendary comedian Mel Brooks, who wrote and directed the original film, is serving as the producer for this project.

At the moment, specifics about the potential sequel of “Spaceballs” are kept secret, encompassing whether any of the original actors reprise their roles or if Gad himself participates. However, Gad has earlier expressed that working on this project is a long-held dream for him. Back in June, he shared his feelings about it on Instagram, stating it as fulfillment of a cherished aspiration.

“Early days still, but working with the legendary Mel freaking Brooks to make something worthy of this franchise and his legacy has been a dream come true. [Benji Samit], [Dan Hernandez], [Josh Greenbaum], [Kevin Salter] and I worship at the altar of all things Brooks and we are doing everything in our power alongside Mel to make sure you get what you’ve waited 37 long years for. EVERYTHING.”

Josh Greenbaum, famed for his contributions to sitcoms like “New Girl” and “Fresh Off the Boat,” along with feature films such as “Will & Harper,” “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” and “Strays,” is primed to direct the upcoming comedy sequel. The script is being written by Gad in collaboration with writers Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, who are well-known for their work on projects such as “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” “Pokémon Detective Pikachu,” “The Addams Family 2,” the Disney+ and Lucasfilm special “Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy,” among others.

Initially, the movie Spaceballs received a mix of positive and negative feedback from critics. Yet, it has since developed a dedicated fanbase who eagerly anticipate the sequel. This puts immense pressure on the upcoming Spaceballs 2, as they have a rich pool of material to draw from. For instance, they can reference superhero films and the increasingly divisive Star Wars series, which served as the foundation for the original Spaceballs.
