As a child of the ’80s, I can vividly remember the sheer joy and laughter that erupted from my household whenever we watched “Spaceballs.” The mere mention of a sequel to this timeless masterpiece fills me with an uncontainable excitement that threatens to explode like a Schwartz-powered spaceship.
Virtually all films by Mel Brooks are side-splittingly funny, but arguably his most impressive work is his spoof of Star Wars, titled Spaceballs. Regrettably, while the film did joke about a sequel, the original 1987 production wouldn’t deviate much from Star Wars in terms of having an immediate follow-up. However, recent developments have Josh Gad connected to a sequel, and he has just given an update that should invigorate fans.
Over the summer, Josh Gad initially hinted at having collaborated on a script for a potential “Spaceballs” sequel. Since then, specifics about “Spaceballs 2” have remained elusive. Nevertheless, in an interview with Forbes, Gad disclosed that the movie’s script has been fully written. Moreover, he shared some insights into the responses garnered from those who’ve had a chance to read the screenplay.
If MGM hadn’t confined me in their Culver studios, I would share with you that the script is completed. Everyone who has read it has been astonished. Working on this project together with Mel Brooks has been a career highlight for me. It felt like a dream come true that all of this transpired. Mel has been incredibly supportive, engaged, and invigorated by this because it’s the one he thought had slipped away. It’s thrilling to finally bring to life what Yogurt prophesied in the first film.
Given that the character from the movie “Frozen” mentions a film titled “Prophesied by Yogurt”, it raises questions about what the actual title of the upcoming movie, “Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money”, might be. This is because in the original Spaceballs, Mel Brooks’ character, Yogurt, refers to the sequel with this name. However, Rick Moranis had previously proposed an alternate title, “Spaceballs III: The Search For Spaceballs II”.
Back when the first movie was released, the notion of a sequel popped up nearly immediately, as per Brooks’ recollection. However, despite this early interest, nothing materialized in the end. It’s worth noting that word about the scripting of SB2 emerged later, after Josh Gad starred in another Mel Brooks project, “History of the World Part Two,” a Hulu-streamed limited series.
It appears that Gad is slated to appear in an upcoming movie, with Mel Brooks serving as producer. However, it’s important to note that the film hasn’t been formally given the go-ahead yet. Moreover, there have been rumors that Josh Greenbaum will direct the much-anticipated comedy. Greenbaum is recognized for his work on comedies like “Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar” and “Strays”.
Although Spaceballs 2 might be in its initial stages of development, according to Josh Gad, there seems to be genuine advancement being made on the project. As a fervent admirer of the original sci-fi comedy, I eagerly anticipate the upcoming movie, regardless of what its final form may be.
