As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the sci-fi universes of my favorite video games, I can hardly contain my excitement at the news that Josh O’Connor is joining Steven Spielberg’s untitled event film! The idea of watching him bring his talent to life in a project with such stellar company and sci-fi elements is like leveling up in real life.
Challengers star Josh O’Connor has signed on to star in Steven Spielberg’s latest feature project.
Universal Pictures is supporting the as-yet-unnamed major production, boasting Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo, Colin Firth, and Eve Hewson among its cast members.
The project is relatively unknown, but it’s been reported to contain science fiction elements and represents Steven Spielberg’s first major production since 2018’s “Ready Player One.” This film is inspired by a story penned by Spielberg himself, while the screenplay has been written by David Koepp, who has collaborated with Spielberg on films such as “Jurassic Park,” “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” “War of the Worlds,” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Veteran collaborator of Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger (known for ‘The Fabelmans’ and ‘West Side Story’), is taking on the role as producer.
Universal has set a May 15, 2026 release date.
At the moment, O’Connor finds himself in the running for awards with the film “Challengers,” a tennis drama directed by Luca Guadagnino. This production also featured Zendaya and Mike Faist in key roles. The movie generated close to $100 million globally through its MGM-distributed theatrical release.
Right now, the actor is shooting Kelly Reichardt’s art heist drama titled “The Mastermind,” alongside Alana Haim. Next year, you’ll find them in Rian Johnson’s new murder mystery, “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” which Netflix will premiere.
O’Connor is by CAA, Independent Talent Group and Johnson Shapiro.
