As a passionate admirer of films that delve into the untold stories of human triumph and scientific advancement, I am beyond excited for the upcoming world premiere of “Joy” at this year’s Cunard Gala during the 68th BFI London Film Festival! The prospect of witnessing Bill Nighy, James Norton, and Thomasin McKenzie bring to life the true story behind the world’s first “test-tube baby” in 1978 is nothing short of exhilarating.
2021’s Cunard Gala is set to kick off the 68th BFI London Film Festival by unveiling the global debut of “Joy,” a film featuring Bill Nighy, James Norton, and Thomasin McKenzie in the leading roles.
The actors from the movie “Joy“, which is based on the real events leading up to the world’s first “test-tube baby” in 1978, have been confirmed to attend the London Film Festival as well.
From Jean Purdy’s (McKenzie) own words, I was a young nurse and embryologist, passionately joining forces with the brilliant minds of Robert Edwards (Norton), a scientist, and Patrick Steptoe (Nighy), a surgeon. Together, we embarked on an extraordinary journey to unravel the enigma of infertility by pioneering in vitro fertilization (IVF). This gripping period drama showcases the indomitable spirit of perseverance and the astonishing capabilities of science as it chronicles our daring trio of visionaries who braved overwhelming obstacles and adversity to make their dream a reality. In doing so, we granted millions of people the hope of sharing in our ambition.
Ben Taylor, known for his work on “Sex Education” and “Cardinal Burns”, expressed his great pride: “It’s a privilege that my first film, ‘Joy’, will have its global debut at this year’s BFI London Film Festival. This tale, often overlooked about British scientific advancement, seems fitting to honor these three trailblazing pioneers – and their groundbreaking invention of IVF – right here in our own backyard.”
As a gamer, I can honestly say that “Joy” holds a special place in my heart, and I believe it’ll strike a chord with countless viewers just like me. Yet, beyond the emotional connection, I fervently hope this movie will echo profoundly amidst today’s discourse, where infertility and choices are under intense scrutiny.
Kristy Matheson, director of the London Film Festival at BFI, commented: “We’re proud to debut the first showing of Joy. This film is skillfully crafted with exceptional performances all around, and we’re certain that viewers will be equally touched as we were by this remarkable true story and its enduring influence on countless lives.”
The heartwarming production titled Joy, created by Jack Thorne and Rachel Mason, is set to make its grand debut at the BFI London Film Festival on October 15th, which takes place at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London. The festival spans from October 9th to the 20th.
