Joy Woods to Play Louise in ‘Gypsy’ on Broadway

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of Broadway musicals, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming revival of Gypsy! With Joy Woods and Jordan Tyson taking on the iconic roles of Louise and June, respectively, this production promises to be nothing short of phenomenal.

Joy Woods will play Louise in the Broadway revival of Gypsy this fall.

Jordan Tyson will portray the character June, with Woods playing a different role, in a production where Audra McDonald plays Mama Rose. The goal of Mama Rose is to mold these two characters into stars. Danny Burstein joins the cast as Herbie, the manager of these two daughters. Additionally, Lesli Margherita will be Tessie Tura, Lili Thomas as Miss Mazeppa, and Mylinda Hull as Miss Electra in this production.

The comeback of the musical, renowned for its music composed by Jule Styne and lyrics penned by Stephen Sondheim, is being led by director George C. Wolfe and choreographer Camille A. Brown. This production initially premiered on Broadway in 1959 and was influenced by the memoir of Gypsy Rose Lee, a burlesque performer, who shares her insights on her bond with her mother.

The upcoming performance will debut at Broadway’s Majestic Theatre, previously known as the long-standing venue for “The Phantom of the Opera.” Previews commence on November 21st, with the official opening set for December 19th.

Trees (Woods) and Tyson have moved on to a musical after starring as younger Allie in the movie “The Notebook”. Interestingly, this is Tyson’s first time on Broadway, while Woods has previously graced the stage as Catherine Parr in “Six: The Musical” and recently appeared in off-Broadway productions of “Little Shop of Horrors” and “I Can Get it For You Wholesale”.

Burstein has taken part in nineteen productions on Broadway and was honored with a Tony Award for his role as Harold Zidler in the musical, “Moulin Rouge.

As a dedicated theater enthusiast, I’ve got to shout out about some incredible performances that have left me absolutely spellbound! First off, Margherita, what an astounding debut she had when she won the Laurence Olivier Award for her role in Zorro The Musical on the West End. But wait, there’s more! She also originated the role of Mrs. Wormwood in Matilda The Musical – simply remarkable!
