As a film enthusiast with over three decades of cinematic exploration under my belt, I must say that Jude Law’s portrayal of Jod Na Nawood in Disney+’s new Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew, is nothing short of enthralling. While there are undeniable similarities to Harrison Ford’s iconic smuggler Han Solo, Law masterfully carves out a unique identity for his character that resonates with my own childhood admiration for the original trilogy.
The new Star Wars series Skeleton Crew has recently begun airing on Disney+. The two-episode premiere takes its time to set up the new world before thrusting its younger cast of characters into their new adventure. One character that was featured in most of the marketing but took his time to be revealed was Jod Na Nawood, played by Jude Law, who didn’t appear until the end of the second episode of the series. Sensitive to the force and with a spark of mischief in his eye, Jod has the makings of a classic Star Wars scoundrel.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Law delved into the character he portrayed and its various aliases. As the comparison to Harrison Ford’s renowned smuggler Han Solo emerged, the actor gleefully engaged in a discussion about his understanding of Han Solo, a perspective that undoubtedly influenced his portrayal of Jod. According to him, this was a significant factor in his performance as Jod.
It’s incredibly flattering to hear that comparison, especially since you’re referring to a 51-year-old man who admired Han Solo growing up. I appreciate the spirit Han embodied in the first three movies – he was a cynic with a sarcastic edge, yet he had a soft spot for the world and showed great heroism when needed.
Jude Law’s ‘Skeleton Crew’ Character Isn’t Entirely Like Han Solo
Nonetheless, Law emphasized that his character wasn’t an exact duplicate of Han Solo. Yet, given the role was a Pirate in the Star Wars Universe, significantly involved in a coming-of-age story, it was challenging to avoid some influence from Han Solo seeping into his performance. Expanding further on his approach to portray Jod, Law explained:
Though I don’t necessarily agree that Jod embodies all those traits, I admire how Harrison Ford infused his character with that charming smirk in the universe. Han Solo had a casual, carefree demeanor and I aimed to incorporate some of that essence into Jod. However, Jod is intricate, so there are other aspects as well.
Beyond the tale of Fern, KB, Neel, and Wim navigating their return journey, “Skeleton Crew” is expected to delve into Jod’s past, uncovering the events that shaped him into a Pirate Captain who endured a mutiny. What makes Jod particularly captivating is the array of pseudonyms he has been known by, introducing an air of mystery reminiscent of Han Solo but less common in characters from the “Star Wars” universe. Furthermore, as Jod interacts with characters that are relatively innocent compared to the norm in this universe, it could result in a blend of partial truths and manipulation.
Law would more critically tease his character’s true nature, as he would say that Jod is “full of contradictions.”
One way of paraphrasing the given text could be: “What I found fascinating about him was his complex nature, as you can never truly predict who he is or what he might do due to his diverse traits. If I had to sum him up in one word, I’d call him a survivor, smart, and agile. However, whether or not he poses a danger remains to be seen.
