As someone who has followed Jay-Z’s career since his early days in the Marcy Projects, I must say this recent turn of events is disheartening. The man who built an empire from the ground up, empowered countless artists, and became a beacon for social justice now finds himself embroiled in a lawsuit that tarnishes his reputation.
The judge has rejected Jay-Z’s attempt to throw out a lawsuit that alleges him and Sean “Diddy” Combs, both rappers, raped a 13-year-old girl over twenty years back.
Back in October, an anonymous woman referred to as “Jane Doe” initiated a lawsuit against Sean Combs (also known as Puff Daddy or Diddy), claiming he sexually assaulted her at a party following the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. On December 8th, the court documents were updated, adding an accusation that Shawn Carter (known professionally as Jay-Z) was also present and involved in the alleged attack.
Jay-Z refutes all accusations, and his lawyer Alex Spiro aims to discard the lawsuit following an NBC News report where the Alabama woman admitted discrepancies in her claims. Last week, Spiro reiterated this stance outside Roc Nation’s New York office, stating that Jay-Z is displeased with the suit and asserts that Jay-Z has no involvement in Diddy’s case.
On Thursday, Judge Analisa Torres rejected Sean Combs’ attempt to dismiss the lawsuit. Furthermore, Judge Torres allowed the woman accusing the two artists to remain anonymous during the initial stages of the trial, but she might be required to disclose her identity if the case continues.
The judge additionally scolded Carter’s legal representative for what she deemed as aggressive court filings and inflammatory speech directed towards the plaintiff’s lawyer, labeling them unsuitable. In her ruling, Torres stated that “Carter’s attorney’s repeated submission of aggressive court documents filled with inflammatory language and personal attacks is inappropriate, a waste of judicial resources, and a tactic unlikely to help his client. The Court will not expedite the legal proceedings solely because counsel insists on it.
Currently, Combs is imprisoned in New York, waiting for his criminal trial on federal sex trafficking allegations. Additionally, he’s dealing with numerous civil lawsuits concerning sexual assault claims.
In response to the judge’s decision, Tony Buzbee, legal representative of Jane Doe, stated to The Hollywood Reporter: “I usually don’t speak about court decisions. However, I must say that the synchronized and frantic attempts to discredit me as a lawyer for alleged victims are proving unsuccessful.
THR has also reached out to Combs’ attorney for comment.
