Count on Julia Ducournau to leave Cannes speechless.
The director from France, who caused a sensation at the world’s most prominent film festival in 2021 by winning the Palme d’Or for her body horror masterpiece titled Titane, is back with her newest blend of genres, called Alpha.
The French director who made waves at the world’s biggest film festival in 2021 by winning the Palme d’Or for her body horror masterpiece titled Titane, is now back with her latest genre-blending production, called Alpha.
Or even more casually:
The director who won big at the world’s largest film festival in 2021 with her body horror movie Titane (Palme d’Or winner), is now back with a new genre-bending movie called Alpha.
Ducourau strolled along the red carpet accompanied by her cast members, namely Tahar Rahim, Golshifteh Farahani, and Emma Mackey. The esteemed Cannes jury president, Juliette Binoche, as well as actress Vicky Krieps, were also present at this event.
As I sat among the thrilled crowd at Cannes, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement as Ducournau and her team received heartfelt applause and cheers for their chilling drama about AIDS, cleverly coded as a horror story. Though not as intense or boundary-pushing as her Palme d’Or winner Titane, Alpha was just as impactful, leaving several cast members teary-eyed when the house lights came on. The applause was deafening for Melissa Boros, who played the lead character Alpha, for Farahani in her role as her mother, and Rahim as her infected uncle.
However, it was Ducournau who received the most thunderous applause. The local audience showed their support by standing and clapping for her in a prolonged 11-minute ovation.
In the ’80s, the movie “Alpha” depicts a made-up epidemic that mirrors the AIDS crisis. The story revolves around Alpha, a 13-year-old girl who endures hardships with her single mother, facing rejection from her peers due to a gossiped rumor about her supposedly having contracted a novel illness. One fateful day, she comes home from school with a tattoo on her arm, causing both her life and her mother’s to spiral out of control. Newcomer Mélissa Boros portrays Alpha, while Golshifteh Farahani plays the role of the mother. Tahar Rahim and Emma Mackey share the screen with them.
Last year, Neon, known for its five-consecutive-year streak of selecting the Palme d’Or winning film (like they did with Titane), acquired the North American distribution rights for Alpha just prior to its filming commencement.
