Julia Louis Dreyfus Says Kamala Harris Is Too Smart to Take Advice from ‘Veep’ Character Selina Meyer

As a fan who has been following Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ career for years, I must say her insights into politics and entertainment are nothing short of captivating. Her experiences playing Selina Meyer on Veep have given her a unique perspective that few others possess. It’s fascinating to see how she draws parallels between the world of fiction and reality, particularly in today’s political climate.

Despite the real-world politics becoming more and more like the dramatic portrayal in ‘Veep’, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the series’ lead actress, believes that Vice President Kamala Harris is handling things much better than any fictitious character ever did.

Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, famous for portraying fictional Vice President Selina Meyer on HBO’s Veep, mentioned to London’s Sunday Times this week that it’s unavoidable for people to make comparisons between her character and the current real-life Vice President. However, she joked, “If Selina were to offer advice to Kamala Harris, I doubt Kamala would pick up the phone. I believe Kamala is intelligent enough to realize that Selina’s suggestions might not be beneficial.”

Although “Veep” concluded in 2019, it has experienced a surge in interest more recently due to Joe Biden’s decision not to run for the presidency in 2024. In season three, Selina Meyer became the first female president after the current POTUS stepped down from office.

In 2022, Louis-Dreyfus and Harris had a conversation. During their chat, the actress discussed how accurately Veep portrayed the culture of Washington, both behind the scenes and in public, to which Harris expressed being a dedicated fan of the series.

As a gaming enthusiast reflecting on my favorite characters, I find myself drawn to Harris for the 2024 presidential race. The resemblance between my beloved fictional hero and this real-life candidate is striking, making me eager to lend my support.

“She stated that female candidates are often subjected to intense scrutiny. This is a fact we acknowledged and even utilized humorously in one of our episodes. In this particular episode, a character proposes that Selina begin her speech with ‘As a woman,’ to which she responds, ‘I can’t identify as a woman! It’s a secret I can’t reveal! Men dislike it, and I believe most women do too.’ We found humor in this situation.”

Louis-Dreyfus also shared her thoughts on Donald Trump’s former running mate, J.D. Vance, who has been criticized for his past remarks about Kamala Harris, calling her a “childless cat lady.” However, it should be noted that Harris is actually the stepmother of two grown children. The response from those on the left to Vance’s comments was one of indignation.

“I mused, Oh, how unfortunate for such a fool they are,” I expressed, sympathizing. “They’re beyond their control, they simply can’t help it!”

The actress also said she sees similarities between Vance and Veep character Jonah Ryan.

“She stated that over the past few years, politics seems to have grown increasingly selfish. Initially, our efforts were often met with resistance because they seemed unrealistic, but now there’s been a noticeable decrease in the harshness of political discourse.”

Armando Iannucci, the mastermind behind ‘Veep’, expressed doubts to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ about creating a similar show today due to the lack of established norms. He stated, “It seems that nowadays, if something unfolds, you can simply shrug it off by saying, ‘Oh, that never happened.’ Or, you can easily twist reality and claim, ‘No, the opposite transpired.’ This suggests there are no rules in place.”

David Mandel, the showrunner, expressed something similar to Iannucci’s thoughts when he told THR, “It’s best for Veep’s dark perspective on reality to settle down and recover before it returns. I find it funnier when things are going well and we can make jokes about how bad they could be, rather than when things are truly awful. But, it definitely makes me think deeply about the show in a positive light. I enjoy seeing people talk about the show and share it.”
