Julia Louis-Dreyfus to Host Panel With Democratic Women Governors During DNC (Exclusive)

As a dedicated fan of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, I can’t help but feel a surge of admiration and excitement when I see her lending her voice to such a significant event. With her extensive experience in portraying powerful female political figures on screen, it seems fitting that she now uses her platform to uplift real-life trailblazers like these Democratic women governors.

During the 2024 Democratic National Convention week, Julia Louis-Dreyfus will collaborate with the Democratic Governors Association to spotlight female governors across the nation.

On August 21st, the Emmy-winning actress, producer, and activist from shows like “Veep” and “Seinfeld” will be hosting a daytime panel during the fourth day of a four-day convention taking place in Chicago. Sharing the stage with her will be eight Democratic female governors: Katie Hobbs of Arizona, Laura Kelly of Kansas, Janet Mills of Maine, Maura Healey of Massachusetts, Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico, Kathy Hochul of New York, and Tina Kotek of Oregon.

As a gamer, I’m thrilled to be part of this dialogue with America’s Democratic female governors during our party’s unification in Chicago. In my statement to The Hollywood Reporter, I express my admiration for these trailblazers who, throughout their tenure, have made history, redefined the discourse about women in executive positions, and achieved remarkable feats for their state’s citizens. They’ve broken through glass ceilings and displayed outstanding leadership. Their voices are crucial. I can’t wait for our conversation and the chance to put these exceptional leaders in the limelight.

The event coincides with a revitalization of the “Veep” series during summer, gaining traction not only on social platforms but also in terms of viewership. Remarkably, the number of viewers spiked by an impressive 350% after the July 21 announcement that President Joe Biden would not run for reelection, paving the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the Democratic ticket in the 2024 presidential race. The real-world events bear striking similarities to plotlines from “Veep”, a critically acclaimed political satire produced by HBO that ran for seven seasons and starred Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a female VP who eventually became the first female POTUS. In response to this resurgence of interest in “Veep” and the recirculation of memes from the show during Harris’ campaign, Louis-Dreyfus, creator Armando Iannucci, and showrunner David Mandel have all expressed their thoughts on the phenomenon.

“Louis-Dreyfus commented on the intense scrutiny faced by female candidates, specifically referring to the comparisons drawn between Kamala Harris and her character Selina Meyer. She explained that this is a common occurrence in reality, and they utilized it for comedic purposes. In one episode, a character proposes Selina begin a speech with ‘As a woman,’ to which she replies, ‘I can’t identify as a woman! People can’t know that! Men despise it, and so do many women who dislike other women, which I believe is most women.’ They exploited this for much comedic material.”

As a gamer speaking, I’ve been following the strides made by this diverse group of governors who stand for millions of my fellow Americans across the nation. They’ve been pioneers in various critical areas, such as:

The eight high-ranking women have developed a close bond in their prestigious roles. They often dine together, engage in casual strolls while discussing matters, and exchange ideas and emotional encouragement through a shared messaging platform, as they confessed in a recent article for Elle.

The discussion led by Louis-Dreyfus will delve into the groundbreaking category of female state executives, along with the DGA Women Governors Fund. Since 2018, the DGA has poured over $80 million into various states and campaigns to elect and re-elect this particular group, while also establishing the Women Governors Fund aimed at electing Democratic women governors.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey praises Julia Louis-Dreyfus for translating the same dedication and vigor that propels her thriving acting career into her off-screen endeavors, such as her long-term activism in defending abortion rights, voting rights, democracy, and addressing climate change. She commends Louis-Dreyfus’s commitment to promoting and electing more women in politics, particularly at the governor, Congressional, and presidential levels. Healey acknowledges that female candidates encounter more hurdles on their path to high office compared to men. As democratic female governors, they have redefined what it means and what it looks like to hold a state executive position.
