Actress Julia Roberts is joining forces with director James Gray for the adaptation of author Peter Swanson’s upcoming bestselling novel, titled “Kill Your Darlings.
Scott Stuber’s revamped United Artists brand, along with Amazon MGM Studios, has acquired an influential collection that includes several prominent producers.
Roberts is teaming up with Lisa Gillan, Marisa Yeres Gill, and their production company Red Om Films to produce this project. Additionally, Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh from Tribeca Studios will be involved in the production as well. Stuber and Nick Nesbitt are also on board as producers for this venture.
The HarperCollins book, not yet released until June, has been swiftly removed from the Hollywood market by both Amazon and Stuber, due to its unique narrative style – a murder mystery unfolding in reverse order.
The story revolves around Tom and Wendy Graves, a couple who’ve been married for more than two decades and seem to have an idyllic life. However, hidden beneath this facade lies a startling truth. As suggested in the book’s summary, the narrative unfolds by moving back in time, revealing significant moments from their lives such as their 50th birthday celebration, purchasing their home, Jason’s birth, the enigmatic death of a work associate. These events collectively depict a marriage marked by a single horrific act they had conspired years ago. Over time, we discover the specifics of what Thom and Wendy did in their youth, a secret that has sustained their union throughout their marriage. Yet, this secret’s grip is weakening, and each spouse starts to ponder if it would be better for one or both of them to ensure the other keeps the secret until death.
Joel Gotler, who represents the book and author, and Swanson will executive produce.
In this project, Roberts is collaborating once again with Red Om Films and Stuber, whom she worked with on the hit thriller “Leave the World Behind” for Netflix. They are also working together on Sam Esmail’s upcoming film titled “Panic Carefully,” where Roberts will be the lead actress and Stuber among the producers. Currently, they are filming this movie in London.
At present, Stuber is working on multiple films with United Artists. Among them are the mature mystery thriller titled “The Girl in the Lake“, which is based on a book by Lauren Oliver and has Scarlett Johansson expressing interest to take the lead role. Additionally, Stuber serves as a producer for Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” production on Netflix. Furthermore, he is associated with the 20th Century project “Deliver Me From Nowhere“, a drama directed by Scott Cooper that features Jeremy Allen White from “The Bear” in the lead role.
At present, Welsh and Rosenthal are working on the forthcoming holiday film titled “Oh. What. Fun.” from Amazon MGM Studios. This movie is being directed by Michael Showalter, and Michelle Pfeiffer serves as the headliner in a talented group of actors.
Known for his movies such as “Armageddon Time,” “Ad Astra,” and “The Lost City of Z,” Gray is currently preparing for the release of his next production, “Paper Tiger.” This upcoming crime thriller boasts an impressive cast including Adam Driver, Anne Hathaway, and Jeremy Strong. Gray is managed by CAA and Jackoway Austen.
Roberts is repped by CAA and Hirsch Wallerstein.
