Julian McMahon, Australian Actor Known for ‘Nip/Tuck’ and ‘Fantastic Four’ Movies, Dies at 56

Actor Julian McMahon, famous for his work in the series ‘Nip/Tuck’ and the ‘Fantastic Four’ films of 2005 and 2007, passed away following a fight against cancer at the age of 56.

McMahon passed away on a Wednesday in Clearwater, Florida, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, according to his representative, David Schiff of MGMT Entertainment.

Born on July 27, 1968, in Sydney, Alexander McMahon is the child of the late Australian prime minister William McMahon and his wife, Lady Sonia McMahon.

In the mid-1990s, he started acting in Australian television series such as “The Power, the Passion” and “Home and Away”. Additionally, he made an appearance on the U.S. soap opera “Another World” in 1993. Later, he moved to prime-time television, landing a role on NBC’s “Profiler”, and starred on the WB’s “Charmed” for three seasons.

He notably acted alongside Dylan Walsh in Ryan Murphy’s FX series, “Nip/Tuck,” a six-season plastic surgery drama. This performance earned him a nomination for a Golden Globe award for his portrayal of Dr. Christian Troy.

In the world of cinema, he portrayed Dr. Doom in Tim Story’s two adaptations of “Fantastic Four”, namely “Fantastic Four” released in 2005 and “Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer” from 2007. His other notable film appearances encompass roles in “Premonition”, “Red”, “Paranoia”, and most recently, “The Surfer” and “The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat”.

Apart from his appearances on FBI: Most Wanted, Runaways, and the lately discontinued murder mystery sitcom The Residence, he has also been seen on other TV shows.

Discussing his experience as an Australian in Hollywood, McMahon once said to the Sydney Morning Herald in 2017, “Hollywood can be quite peculiar, and at times it seems like a survival-of-the-fittest mentality prevails.” In the beginning, he reminisced, there were moments when he felt as though he didn’t measure up, that success would never come his way, and that nothing was progressing for him. He added, “It felt like I wasn’t the right fit, perhaps I should try something else or even consider returning to Australia, which many others did.

Regarding his character in “FBI: Most Wanted”, McMahon shared with “Soap Opera Digest” that it’s an incredibly intriguing role.

He mentioned that when he was considering returning to network television, he had read numerous scripts. To his surprise, this particular one stood out the most. Reflecting on his decision, he joined the CBS series (which had a backdoor pilot in the first season of FBI) and here he is today.

Looking back at his time with Soap Opera Digest, McMahon acknowledged the “dedication” he learned during his stints on shows like The Power, The Passion, and Nip/Tuck as key factors in his success.

He expressed that his enthusiasm for his work has always remained unwavering. He believes this dedication is a significant factor in his success, as he’s consistently been dedicated to improving his skills and finding joy in his chosen field.

His third wife is Kelly, married in 2014; daughter Madison is with his second wife, Brooke Burns; his first wife was Dannii Minogue, sister of Kylie.)

McMahon experienced an amusing incident with his former brother-in-law during the filming of a scene where they shared a kiss, as he returned to Australia in 2018 to work on the production of “Swinging Safari“.

In the heat of the moment, Steph Elliott gave me free rein, saying ‘Go ahead, Julian!’ I thought to myself, ‘Why not?’ and before I knew it, I found myself kissing my former sister-in-law! Her surprised reaction, as if confronted by a strange creature, had everyone in stitches.
