Julie Bowen Reacts To Her Famous Happy Gilmore Lingerie Scene (And Its Big Return In The Sequel)

Spoilers ahead for Happy Gilmore 2.

Adam Sandler boasts a considerable number of cherished films in his extensive filmography, such as “Happy Gilmore.” This 1996 sports comedy (accessible with a Netflix subscription) is often considered among Sandler’s top romantic comedies, thanks to the heartwarming love story between his character and Julie Bowen’s Virginia Venit. She returned for “Happy Gilmore 2,” and recently shared her thoughts on the original movie’s lingerie scene with TopMob, discussing its impact on the sequel.

Information regarding “Happy Gilmore 2 ” has been scarce before its Netflix debut, as Sandman and his crew have been keeping the secrets surrounding the highly anticipated sequel close to their chests. This includes the role of Virginia, a significant character, who experiences a major twist at the beginning of the Adam Sandler film. In the video above, I had the opportunity to interview the cast prior to the sequel’s release, and I asked Bowen about the memorable lingerie scene from the first movie. She revealed that:

Reading the initial script was what sparked my affection for it. You can’t predict how fantastic the performances will be, or if they’ll even get Carl Weathers involved. As you read, you might think it’s amusing but uncertain. But then, I reach that scene and I burst out laughing 30 years ago, over two pitchers of beer. And I thought, ‘I want this script.’

She’s not off-base. Virginia, who plays a buttoned-up professional character in Happy Gilmore, found it amusing and unexpected to appear in lingerie while carrying two large pitchers of beer in the “Happy Place.” This was one of the main factors that encouraged the Modern Family star to join the 1996 original.

Title Happy Gilmore 2 brims with nods and homages to the initial film, as Adam Sandler reuses the same soundtrack. Additionally, there’s a fleeting moment where Old Virginia reappears in lingerie, and present-day Bowen gets to act alongside her younger counterpart in a scene. In an interview, she elaborated further on that memorable sequence.

For me, it’s consistently amusing and satirical, mimicking sex-themed pinups, never making me feel objectified. Now that it’s returning, my concern is whether I can still appreciate it in the same way. The sole thing causing me apprehension is this.

Certainly, Bowen wasn’t necessarily required to reappear in the white lingerie, or if she did, that scene didn’t make it into the final cut. What we did see was both versions of Virginia sharing screen time together instead. This is just another instance where Happy Gilmore 2 feels like a heartfelt tribute to the original film.

As a die-hard film fan, I was thrilled to catch a glimpse of Julie Bowen in the trailer for “Happy Gilmore 2,” although her screen time seemed limited at first. However, what really got my heart racing was the return of several original actors like Christopher McDonald, Kevin Nealon, Dan Patrick, and Verne Lundquist.

During our chat, Julie shared her enthusiasm for Virginia’s role in “The Happy Place,” expressing her eagerness to see how things unfold on screen.

I always felt completely respected and in control of all of it.

Excitement for the long-delayed comedy is building, with the original “Happy Gilmore” seeing a surge in popularity on Netflix before its premiere. The fact that Julie Bowen reprises her role as Virginia reassures fans that the essence of the first film will endure, and let me tell you, there are numerous callbacks and hidden references to the initial installment.

On July 25th, 2025, Happy Gilmore 2 will debut on Netflix, marking its inclusion in the upcoming movie releases. It remains to be seen if this film will motivate Adam Sandler to generate additional sequels for his popular ’90s films such as Billy Madison and The Waterboy.
