As a seasoned gamer who’s seen more than a few rounds of Hollywood drama, I can’t help but empathize with Julie Bowen’s experiences. The relentless attempts by the media to stir up rivalries between fellow actresses like Sofía Vergara and herself feels all too familiar – it’s like playing a game of Whisper Down the Lane, only the stakes are higher.
Julie Bowen has spoken candidly about the media attempting to fabricate a rivalry between herself and her fellow ‘Modern Family’ cast member, Sofia Vergara.
On Jennie Garth’s podcast “90210MG”, Bowen discussed an unusual incident where the media created a false rivalry between herself and Vergara, a friendship that has persisted to this day. Bowen stated, “On ‘Modern Family’, the press consistently tried to portray Sofia and me as some kind of Betty and Veronica.”
Later on, Bowen brought up an observation about how Garth had gone through similar situations with the media when she was starring on 90210. “I realized they did something like that with you and Shannen [Doherty],” she mentioned. She went on to explain that she was taken aback when she discovered that Garth and Doherty were in fact friends, after watching a morning show segment of them shopping together. This led her to conclude, “It seems we weren’t getting an accurate portrayal of real life through the press.”
I recalled that the media seemed bent on creating a rivalry between me and Vergara, as if we harbored mutual animosity. (Fan perspective: It was frustrating to see this manufactured feud, knowing the truth of our friendship.)
As a fervent admirer, I’d like to express my thoughts on this notion that only one woman can experience joy at once. It struck me when I saw Sofía, her humor, modesty, audacity, and zest for life were captivating. She dances, she laughs, she savors cake – and I adore it all!
To put it simply, Bowen expressed deep respect for Vergara, praising many of her qualities and learning a great deal about strong, authentic female empowerment from her. She found it disheartening when the media continued to push a certain narrative, but she never contributed to it herself.
Occasionally, Bowen found herself unintentionally reading sensationalized gossip magazines during her grocery trips, filled with untrue stories about supposed feuds among the women. “That’s simply absurd; that’s just preposterous,” she recalled thinking upon encountering such tabloid nonsense.
Previously, Bowen discussed the manufactured dispute on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” back in 2016. She shared, “Every day I receive a call or an email saying, ‘So-and-so tabloid will be publishing a story that you…'” This time it was about, “‘You were cold to Sofía Vergara because you’re jealous of her fame.'” She then reached out to Vergara and they spoke. Bowen asked, “What should I say?” since they are friends. She joked, “What should I say? You’re funny.”
Vergara’s reply was “Just go ahead and take my blouse.” In the end, Bowen took Vergara’s off-the-shoulder, periwinkle colored top for Ellen.
