As a young artist hustling to make ends meet in the bustling cityscape of New York, I’ve often found myself yearning for a taste of the cultural melting pot that is the Whitney Museum. Yet, the financial burden of admission fees has always been a daunting obstacle. That’s why Julie Mehretu’s generous $2 million USD donation, coupled with Susan Hess’s support, feels like a breath of fresh air.
Starting mid-December 2024, I’m thrilled to share that the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York will be granting free admission to us gamers under 25 for the next three years! This generous move is a result of a $2 million USD donation from artist and board member Julie Mehretu, with added support from philanthropist Susan Hess.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, artist Mehretu underscored the necessity of broadening the reach of contemporary art. She remarked, “For the conversation to progress, it’s crucial that more individuals join in.” Similarly, Whitney Museum director Scott Rothkopf shared this view, striving to make the museum “one of the most accessible large museums in America.
The museum has previously achieved success through initiatives like “Free Friday Nights” and “Free Second Sundays,” attracting approximately 300,000 visitors in the last year, with around 60% identifying as part of Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC) communities and a significant number being younger than the usual museum attendees.
