As a gamer who’s been around for a while, I can certainly relate to June Squibb’s resilience and determination. She’s like the veteran player in our gaming world, still leveling up with each passing year!
Since the premiere of her film “Thelma” at the Sundance Film Festival in January, June Squibb has been thoroughly amused by the consistent praise she’s received throughout the year.
The veteran actress, who recently celebrated her 95th birthday, remarks on the significant attention given to her first major acting role in Josh Margolin’s senior citizen dramedy. She notes that people often joke about it, implying a sense of surprise and admiration. Above all, they are amazed that she is still active in her career.
2024 has been a busy year for me, juggling roles in movies like “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead,” “Velma,” “Inside Out 2,” “American Horror Stories,” and “Lost & Found in Cleveland.” The new year promises even more exciting projects!
Squibb mentioned to The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet during the recent Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences women’s luncheon, hosted by Chanel at the Academy Museum, that she has been given some tasks to complete, but the details are still undecided.
Instead of ruining a deal that’s still being negotiated, Squibb shifted the conversation to their upcoming project: Squibb will star in Scarlett Johansson‘s directorial debut, titled Eleanor the Great, sharing screen time with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jessica Hecht, and Erin Kellyman.
The actress, who gained recognition following her Oscar-nominated role with Bruce Dern in ‘Nebraska,’ expressed great enthusiasm. She commented that finding two exceptional films such as ‘Thelma’ and ‘Eleanor the Great’ back to back is not common, she emphasized.
In my gaming world, I’d say: “I, a seasoned gamer, embark on an emotional journey with Eleanor Morgenstein, a 90-year-old woman who’s recently lost her best friend. After decades away, New York City calls me back as Eleanor sets out to rebuild her life in the city that never sleeps.
Squibb praises Johansson, saying she was ‘remarkable.’ Her intuition as an actress allowed her to grasp Squibb’s intentions, the direction of the scene, and the subtle shifts in tone almost instantly. This is impressive because such insight isn’t always found. Squibb has collaborated with other talented directors who lack this level of understanding, so working with Johansson was truly exceptional.
Squibb expressed that they instantly connected with Johansson. “She’s simply wonderful,” she said. “She’s incredibly genuine. There’s no pretense about her. We genuinely clicked because we share similar authenticity.
