Justin Bieber’s ‘Swag’: A Silver Lining for the No. 2 Chart Debut

After an absence of four years, Justin Bieber made his comeback last week with some style and flair.

On July 11, the pop music royalty unveiled his long-awaited debut album after four years, marking a significant milestone in a turbulent five-year period. This phase saw Justin Bieber grappling with health complications triggered by Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, leading to the cancellation of his North American tour. Additionally, he made a multimillion-dollar deal selling his publishing rights, experienced a dramatic separation from his manager Scooter Braun, and welcomed his first child into the world.

Industry experts have been eagerly anticipating Belieber’s performance during this crucial phase of his career, considering the significant changes in his personal life and professional ventures, the formation of a new team around him, and the extended gap between his albums – his longest yet.

The answer, one week in, appears to be quite well.

In a close second on Billboard’s 200 Albums chart, Swag debuted, trailing slightly behind Travis Scott’s JackBoys 2. The latter claimed the top spot primarily due to strong physical sales of approximately 160,000 units. This surge in sales was largely driven by Scott offering various physical editions of his album, which significantly boosted his chart position.

In a shift from his previous 15-year career, Bieber’s latest album didn’t debut at number one, ending his six-album streak of chart-topping debuts. However, it’s important to note that this debut performance is still better than his most recent release.

According to Luminate, Swag sold about 163,000 copies, which was 9,000 more than Justice’s debut. This is a significant win considering that Swag’s first-week sales were only digital because the physical copies haven’t been shipped out yet. In contrast, around 30,000 of Justice’s 154,000 initial sales came from traditional album purchases.

Swag sold approximately 163,000 units in its first week, beating Justice’s debut by 9,000 copies. This is impressive because Swag’s initial sales were only online since the physical copies haven’t been sent out yet. In contrast, about 30,000 of Justice’s 154,000 first-week sales came from traditional CD or vinyl purchases.

Among those figures, any of them might seem modest when put next to Bieber’s initial sales for “Purpose” – the album debuted with approximately 650,000 copies sold in its first week. However, considering the current streaming era where physical sales are largely insignificant for most artists apart from Taylor Swift, achieving over 160,000 units solely through streaming is a commendable beginning.

This week, I smashed my own records with “Swag,” racking up an incredible 198.77 million streams, according to Luminate. Plus, my breakout hit “Daisies” skyrocketed to Number 2 on the Hot 100. It even ruled Spotify and Apple Music’s daily U.S. charts this week! Sixteen of my tracks made it onto the Hot 100 this week, making it a truly unforgettable gaming session for me.

With Justin Bieber’s latest era in high gear, the burning query for his fans, or Swag, is: how long will these initial figures hold strong when we move into week two?
