Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai director Rakesh Roshan claims South films are not ‘progressing’; says, ‘They play on safe grounds’

Renowned filmmaker Rakesh Roshan has captivated audiences with his diverse roles in Indian cinema, spanning acting, directing, and production. Despite the ongoing debate about South versus Bollywood movies causing a buzz online, the director of Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai has weighed in, expressing that he believes South films are not moving forward.

In a recent chat I had over Zoom, esteemed filmmaker Rakesh Roshan pointed out an interesting observation about South films – they have a strong foundation in traditional storytelling elements such as songs, action sequences, and dialogue-driven emotions. As he put it, “They’re not pushing boundaries. Technically, they are evolving, but when it comes to the art of storytelling, they stick to what works. Their success lies in their consistency, as they refuse to stray from the paths that have proven effective.

As stated by Roshan, the Hindi film industry is “blazing new trails.” He backed up his statement by referencing his own experience, noting that following the release of Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, he opted against making another romantic movie. Instead, he produced Koi Mil Gaya, which featured Hrithik Roshan’s character as a superhero. “These are the risks we embraced,” he continued. “They shy away from such challenges. They stick to what is safe.

Presently, Rakesh Roshan is thrilled about the re-emergence of Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, a film initially launched in 2000. This movie served as the debut for his son, Hrithik Roshan, and Ameesha Patel within the industry. Over time, this romantic drama has been esteemed by film enthusiasts as a cult classic.

During a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Roshan disclosed that following his son’s movie debut, he was attacked in daylight Mumbai as he exited his workplace. Even though he was hit by two bullets, the director chose to drive himself to the hospital and eventually made a full recovery.

Shortly thereafter, it was discovered that some criminal elements in the underworld were attempting to enlist Hrithik Roshan for a movie they were financing. Since Rakesh Roshan declined their requests, he encountered repercussions. Speaking to the press, the director stated, “I never implied that Hrithik would be able to work on their film,” and continued by claiming that he consistently provided them with reasons, stating that Hrithik was unavailable due to scheduling conflicts.
