Kaitlyn Dever’s character in the upcoming Netflix series, titled Apple Cider Vinegar, claims she beat cancer using apple cider vinegar. However, this is a fictional story based on a falsehood and has been transformed into a darkly humorous comedy for the streaming service. The trailer suggests that this could be a show you won’t want to miss.
Additionally starring Alycia Debnam-Carey from “The 100” and “Fear The Walking Dead”, as well as Aisha Dee from “The Bold Type”, this show revolves around two characters who attempt to cure their critical illnesses through alternative methods like health and wellness, rather than traditional medical science. The focus of “Apple Cider Vinegar” is on the character Belle Gibson (portrayed by Dever), a former Instagram scammer and Australian wellness influencer who falsely claimed to have cured her terminal brain cancer through such means. As the official Netflix press release states, Belle has never actually been diagnosed with or cured of the malignant brain tumor that she falsely presented on social media, her mobile app, and its accompanying cookbook.
Cure Cancer With ‘Apple Cider Vinegar’? The Series Is Based On A “True” Story
The series was originated by Australian writer Samantha Strauss (known for her work on ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ and ‘The End’), primarily influenced by the book ‘The Woman Who Fooled the World’ written by journalists Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano. As per Netflix’s Tudum, Strauss initially encountered Gibson’s tale through the authors’ reports in ‘The Age’, a Melbourne newspaper. The series, as explained by Strauss, uses creative freedom to critique and probe into the topic of how media manipulates food as a tool against us, while also exploring our yearning for nourishment, yet pointing out that wellness is often a luxury and can be quite costly.
In the show, Alycia Debnam-Carey portrays Milla Blake, a character who constructs a platform emphasizing food’s ability to combat cancer. Meanwhile, Aisha Dee takes on the role of Milla’s friend Chanelle, who crosses paths with Belle at an event and subsequently collaborates with her in her burgeoning business. This collaboration, no doubt, stirs up some tension and complicates their personal relationships.
According to the source material’s official synopsis:
In just under 18 months, Gibson, who had dropped out of high school and become a teenage mother, constructed a worldwide business that catapulted her into prominence and prosperity. Her fanbase spanned cities like Melbourne, Los Angeles, and London, she secured international book contracts, developed a top-selling mobile app, and deceived publishing giant Penguin Books and tech titan Apple. She was a digital-era icon, a solo cult figure, an idol of the “wellness” community, and an inspiration to many.
The book titled “The Woman Who Fooled the World” delves into the intrigue and reasons behind the deception unmasked by two diligent journalists. It chronicles the public response to this scandal, with notable headlines in ‘Time Magazine’ and Gibson making an appearance on ‘The Washington Post‘s annual list of the year’s most notorious villains.
The Deception Unveiled: The Woman Behind the World’s Deception”
This intriguing piece delves into the allure of unconventional cancer remedies, the burgeoning market of wellness, and the influential role that social media plays in it. It chronicles not just Gibson’s misguided endeavor, but also the heart-wrenching consequences her deception had on her followers and those battling cancer.
Filmed right in Melbourne, this series features Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Mark Coles Smith, Ashley Zukerman, Susie Porter, Matt Nable, Phoenix Raei, Chai Hansen, Richard Davies, Essie Davis, Kieran Darcy-Smith, and Catherine McClements as its stars.
Apple Cider Vinegar is slated to drop on Netflix beginning February 6, 2025.
