On the climactic evening of the Democratic National Convention held at Chicago’s United Center last Thursday, I was among thousands of passionate fans who couldn’t help but notice a striking wave of white throughout the stadium. As female attendees settled into their seats, adorning themselves in pristine white blouses, dresses, and power suits, it became evident that we were all heeding the same call to pay tribute to the longstanding suffrage movement that culminated in American women gaining the right to vote in 1920.
On a lively night for Democrats culminating in Vice President Kamala Harris accepting the party’s presidential nomination, political analysts and TV hosts noticed an apparent fashion trend as they scanned the crowd: nearly everyone was dressed in white ensembles. Some of these outfits were adorned with American flags or displayed wide smiles, fueling speculation about whether Harris would also choose to wear white, reminiscent of Hillary Clinton’s choice at the DNC in Philadelphia in 2016 when discussions revolved around breaking through glass ceilings.
Kerry Washington, the star host for the evening’s event, began the show wearing a crocheted off-white top and skirt. The camera then panned to Nancy Pelosi, elegantly dressed in a white power suit with a vibrant blue undershirt beneath. Gabby Giffords chose an off-white blazer as she expressed her strong views on gun reform. In the same segment, Rep.
