Hideki Kamiya is seldom reserved about his opinions, and the recent uproar over Assassin’s Creed Shadows is another topic he doesn’t shy away from discussing.
In his view, the fuss is just internet noise—loud but far from what most people actually feel.
When it was announced that Ubisoft would have a character of African descent, Yasuke, as the main character in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, a modest yet expressive segment of the online community began expressing dissent.
Controversies surrounding alleged historical inaccuracies, enforced diversity, and contentious views expressed by individuals like Elon Musk ignited heated discussions. Some even resorted to damaging Yasuke’s online presence and labeling Ubisoft’s creative decisions as political maneuverings. However, Kamiya remains unconvinced by such claims.
In his recent update about X, he emphasized that the negative response primarily stems from an extremely vocal minority. According to him, they tend to respond excessively and find fault in every detail.
Simultaneously, most folks, often referred to as “ordinary people,” are peacefully indulging in the game. They aren’t interested in stirring up debates or dissecting each decision; instead, they are simply engaging, discovering, and having a good time.
In simpler terms, he mentioned that incidents like this kind of controversy aren’t unprecedented for Assassin’s Creed games. Essentially, with each major launch, there are people who aim to create a ruckus. What makes this situation different is just how noticeable the disturbance became.
Kamiya highlighted that in online forums, calm and reasonable viewpoints can get overshadowed, as those individuals tend to keep quiet, allowing loud voices to dominate the conversation instead.
Despite facing criticism prior to its launch, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been demonstrating remarkable success since then.
In just under two days since its release, I’ve become one of the more than 2 million players who have jumped on board, helping this game break new Steam records and climb swiftly to the peak of the UK’s physical sales charts. It’s a thrill to be part of such an incredible launch!
I can’t help but feel ecstatic seeing our hard work being rewarded and the game receiving such an overwhelming amount of affection from fans, just as Kamiya pointed out!
Even though there’s a lot of strong opinions floating around online, it’s important to note that Kamiya’s viewpoint stands out for its straightforwardness: not all headlines, tweets, or discussions accurately reflect the feelings of the majority of gamers.
Most people aren’t losing sleep over Yasuke. They’re just having a good time.
