As a lifestyle expert with over two decades of experience in the entertainment industry, I must say that the box office is indeed a mysterious beast, capable of surprising us with its unpredictable nature. This year, we have seen two notable examples from Tamil cinema: Indian 2 and Kanguva.
The movie industry can be quite erratic and full of surprises. Occasionally, films made on a small budget will astound everyone with their impressive box office earnings, while it’s not uncommon for high-budget blockbusters to disappoint at the box office instead.
2019 has witnessed Tamil cinema’s two largest flops at the box office: Indian 2 and Kanguva. Below is a breakdown of their earnings during their initial week in India:
Kanguva remained 40% below Indian 2 in week 1
Kanguva, starring Suriya in the lead role along with Bobby Deol and Disha Patani, wrapped up its opening week at just Rs 63.50 crore. In comparison, Indian 2 had a better first week and ended at Rs 89 crore gross at the domestic box office.
In the realm of captivating period dramas, I found myself immersed in two Tamil masterpieces recently – the mystical Shankar-directed political drama and the Siruthai Siva-crafted period action-drama. Initially, both films garnered impressive opening numbers: Shankar’s creation grossed Rs 31 crore on its premiere day, while Indian 2, helmed by Kamal Haasan, saw a respectable start with Rs 26 crore.
Over the opening weekend, Kamal Haasan’s movie earned approximately 72.5 crores rupees, while Suriya’s film managed to collect around 56.75 crores over its extended four-day weekend in India. Interestingly, both films maintained a steady pace during the weekdays, with Indian 2 leading the way.
Negative talk curtails Kanguva & Indian 2’s business
On a comparable budget of approximately 3.5 billion rupees apiece, both films, Kanguva and Indian 2, received unfavorable audience reviews, effectively determining their financial failure at the box office from their very first day.
Funded by Lyca Productions, Indian 2 enjoyed a boost from prominent figures involved in the project, which enhanced its prospects both domestically and internationally. The film concluded its global cinema run with approximately 1500 million INR in earnings. Conversely, Studio Green’s production may suffer significant financial losses due to its projected final gross at the worldwide box office falling below 1000 million INR.
