Kara Young Becomes First Black Performer to Win a Tony Award Two Years in a Row

Kara Young has made history.

Last Sunday evening, I was thrilled to claim my second consecutive Tony Award for Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Play, this time for the captivating show “Purpose.” In this production, I step into the shoes of Aziza, a dedicated social worker hailing from Harlem. This latest victory makes history as it marks the first instance of a Black performer securing two Tony Awards consecutively. Over the past four years, I’ve had the immense privilege of being recognized in this prestigious ceremony.

As a devoted theater enthusiast, I cannot help but express my deep-seated admiration for the profound impact it has on my life. In these troubled times when our world seems so fractured, the stage serves as an invaluable sanctuary – a haven where we can come together, united by shared emotions and experiences. It is a place that demands reverence and respect, reminding us of our common humanity.

Previously, Young secured her first Tony Award in the same category a year ago, for the production titled “Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch“. Earlier, she was also recognized with nominations for both “Clyde’s” and “Cost of Living“.

This year, she surpassed Tala Ashe, Jessica Hecht (from “Eureka Day”), Marjan Neshat, and Fina Strazza (from “John Proctor Is the Villain”) in competition.

In the press room, as Young addressed reporters, it was simultaneously announced that Purpose had won the award for Best Play. Young expressed her sense of honor at being part of history. She stated, “It seems like we are so divided in the world today, but when we’re in a theater, nothing else matters except the story, our heartbeats, and our attentive ears or eyes for those who require it. I feel deeply grateful and overwhelmed by gratitude.” She added, “Diversity embodies humanity itself.
