Karan Arjun: When Rakesh Roshan ‘fired’ THIS popular actor from Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan-led 1995 film

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for the nuances of Bollywood and its behind-the-scenes drama, I must say that Rakesh Roshan‘s recent revelations about the making of Karan Arjun are a fascinating glimpse into the industry’s past. It’s interesting to see how even legends like Gulshan Grover had their share of challenges when it came to punctuality, and how this decision ultimately led to the breakout role for Aasif Sheikh.

Rakesh Roshan is gearing up to delight audiences once more with the re-release of his 1995 blockbuster, Karan Arjun. Starring Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, this ’90s classic was a treasure, and the filmmaker has been granting numerous interviews, disclosing fascinating behind-the-scenes stories about the movie. Most recently, he divulged that originally, Gulshan Grover was part of his cast, but had to let him go because he frequently arrived late on set.

In a candid conversation with Siddharth Kannan on his YouTube channel, Rakesh Roshan revealed he had earlier cast Gulshan Grover for the villainous role of ‘Suraj’ in the 1995 film. However, the actor then managed shoots for several films and used to turn up late on sets.

He recalled the situation, “Gulshan Grover is a very fine actor. He was my first choice for the role. But he was working on several films at that time. For an 11 am shoot, he would show up at 4 pm. This went on for a couple of days.”

Over several days, the situation remained unchanged, prompting him to address it with the actor. He expressed his inability to carry on under the current working conditions. Grover proposed they could film close-ups of him and let him go, but Rakesh Roshan was hesitant. Ultimately, he asked him to depart, while expressing interest in collaborating on a future project.

After Gulshan Grover abruptly departed during production, the filmmaker quickly sought an alternative actor and chose Aasif Sheikh, who was relatively new to the industry at the time. Roshan, discussing his professional interactions with Sheikh, said, “What a laugh! I instructed him to utilize that line whenever it seemed appropriate. He only delivered it when it felt right, which is why it became so iconic.” The part significantly boosted Aasif’s reputation and he is now recognized for his role in the TV show Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain.

In the movie “Karan Arjun,” Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Kajol, Mamta Kulkarni, and Amish Puri played pivotal roles. When it premiered, it was an immediate success. It’s scheduled to return to theaters on November 22, 2024.
