As a lifestyle expert reflecting on Karan Johar’s life journey, it is truly inspiring to witness his growth and self-acceptance. His courage to share his personal experiences, especially those from his childhood, provides valuable insights into the challenges faced by individuals who are different or perceived as such.
Karan Johar, one of Bollywood’s renowned directors, is also recognized for his candidness. Lately, the man behind Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani reminisced about his younger years, back when he was given the nickname ‘pansy’ due to being perceived as ‘feminine’ during his childhood.
In a recent conversation with Dr. Jai Madaan on her YouTube channel, Karan Johar recalled realizing a little earlier that he was not in the ‘comfortable’ environment around him. “Mujhe laga main doosron ladkon ki tarah nahin hoon (I felt I was not like other boys).”
He articulated his unique qualities by contrasting himself with other boys based on their thought processes, interests in activities such as games/sports, nature, and personalities. Notably, the esteemed filmmaker Karan revealed that he entered a distinct mental state when he discovered, during his years aged 7-9, that he had developed a strong attachment to food, sweets, and desserts due to the weight he carried at that time.
The 52-year-old individual confessed that he struggled to find peace amidst challenging circumstances as he wrestled with his inner conflicts, often questioning why he felt distinct from others. However, it wasn’t until much later that he embraced and celebrated his true identity. “I must turn this experience into my source of strength instead of feeling apologetic about who I am,” he reminisced.
Beyond that, the director of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil expressed that the term “pansy” was particularly troubling for him. He explained that he frequently encountered this word during his college years in the ’80s and early ’90s because he was considered feminine as a child. He admitted that hearing this word often caused him great distress.
In a straightforward manner, he stated that one specific comment struck him as a personal verbal assault, targeting his identity and character. He explained that it was challenging for him to articulate his unique traits or preferences, which set him apart from other men. However, when they criticized him, it often led him to question his own existence.
Karan Johar is looking forward to his upcoming produced show, Call Me Bae led by Ananya Panday.
