The Karate Kid series remains active, as the narrative unfolds beyond the Netflix show Cobra Kai.
The movie, “Karate Kid: Legends,” released this year, reintroduces characters from the soft reboot of “The Karate Kid” (2010). It’s the sixth installment in the franchise. Despite receiving negative reviews, it has garnered a remarkable audience score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the highest for the entire series.
The movie initially received a rather mediocre review, with a “rotten” rating of 55% from the critics. However, as more opinions were shared, its score slightly increased to 57%. Yet, it continues to bear the “rotten” label. Contrarily, the audience’s response offers a different perspective.
The movie “Karate Kid: Legends” has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from viewers, with an impressive 88% approval rating on the review-aggregator site since its release in theaters on May 30. This score is consistent with the general audience’s rating of 83%, which also indicates a strong response to the film. Critics have hailed it as a “superb addition” to the series, commending both the fighting sequences and the storyline.
In the history of the Karate Kid franchise, none of the movies had a higher audience rating than the latest one, Karate Kid: Legends. Previously, the top spot was held by the original 1984 movie, The Karate Kid, which boasted an impressive 83% audience approval and a Certified Fresh score of 81% from critics. This was closely followed by the 2010 soft reboot of the same name, which also received a 67% approval from both critics and audiences. These two films were the only ones in the franchise to receive positive ratings from both groups.
In a nutshell, “The Karate Kid Part II” (released in 1986) received mixed reviews, earning 49% approval from critics and 52% from viewers. The sequel that followed in 1989, titled “The Karate Kid Part III,” fared even worse with a dismal 18% from the critics and 35% from the audience. Interestingly, the film with the lowest ratings across the series is the 1994 movie starring Hilary Swank, known as “The Next Karate Kid,” which managed only 20% approval from critics and 24% from viewers.
Cobra Kai Boasts the Best Scores in the Franchise
Right now, “Karate Kid: Legends” has the highest audience appreciation, but when it comes to overall rating, the martial arts drama series “Cobra Kai” takes the lead. “Cobra Kai” continues Daniel LaRusso’s journey as Johnny Lawrence seeks redemption. Initially, the series was released on YouTube Red, but after two seasons, it moved to Netflix.
After six seasons, the popular show Cobra Kai concluded in February. Critics and viewers alike have given it high praise, with a 94% approval rating from critics and a similarly impressive 90% from audiences. However, the upcoming film has garnered excitement, but so far, no new addition to the Karate Kid series has matched the popularity of the Netflix series.
Karate Kid: Legends is playing in theaters.
