Earlier this year, I had the privilege of seeing Kareena Kapoor’s film The Buckingham Murders in theaters. As I gear up for the release of Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again, I find myself reflecting on the distinct appeal each movie holds, a lesson learned from Hansal Mehta’s murder mystery that faced challenges at the box office. Each project caters to a different audience spectrum, making every new venture an exciting exploration for me as an artist.
In a recent chat with Miss Malini, Kareena Kapoor revealed that she’s left her less prosperous Fridays behind due to her personal growth, age, and wisdom. She openly admits to being “film savvy,” crediting this understanding to her renowned film lineage and the clever, astute individuals in her circle. She underscored the importance of these people for keeping her grounded.
Each movie caters to a distinct group of viewers, particularly nowadays. For instance, those who prefer watching Singham (Again) would not typically opt for Buckingham Murders, which was more intellectual, English, and indie in nature. On the other hand, the audience for Jaane Jaan on Netflix differs from those drawn to Crew. It’s essential to grasp how to strike a balance between these diverse preferences, and I believe I have mastered this skill.
Hansal Mehta additionally voiced his opinions regarding the less-than-stellar earnings at the box office for his murder mystery production. This seasoned filmmaker articulated his annoyance towards the emphasis placed solely on the financial aspects of his creative endeavors. He posits that modern films have devolved into a simplified form, as viewers tend to disregard the intricate narratives and characters in favor of focusing on box office revenues.
Mehta stated that while box-office receipts provide a part of the overall picture, they don’t fully represent the entire story. He highlighted that Ektaa Kapoor, the co-producer, had previously made it clear that earnings and actual profits are not always synonymous when discussing a film’s trailer launch.
According to Mehta, the movie started making profits right from its opening day. Speaking with Hindustan Times, he emphasized that it’s essential to let word-of-mouth build up and not rush to judge a film based on just the first few days of its release. He went on to say that people often write off a film prematurely over a weekend.
In the very same discussion, it was made clear by Mehta that the incorrect box office figures had been cited. He explained that there were two versions of the film, one in Hinglish and another in Hindi. The issue was that only the earnings of one version were publicized.
