Karla Sofia Gascón Talks ‘Emilia Pérez’ Oscar Buzz in San Sebastian: “I Want the Focus to Be on My Acting”

As a fan of powerful performances and groundbreaking representation, I am utterly captivated by Karla Sofia Gascón’s journey as Emilia Pérez in Jacques Audiard’s masterpiece. Her dual role in this Spanish language musical is not only a testament to her immense talent but also serves as a beacon of hope for the trans community.

Emilia Perez shares that the remarkable actress Karla Sofia Gascón has openly discussed her role in Jacques Audiard’s unique Spanish-language musical, mentioning that the prospect of becoming a part of history by receiving an Oscar nomination is something beyond her power to influence.

The actress, identified as a transgender woman, has garnered widespread praise since the movie’s premiere at Cannes, earning her the best actress award alongside fellow stars Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez in May. Gascón skillfully portrays dual characters: one, a ruthless cartel boss, and the other, Emilia Pérez, who has been on female hormone treatment for two years, preparing to finalize her gender transition by simulating her death and abandoning her criminal lifestyle.

During a conversation at the San Sebastian Film Festival held in Spain on Sunday, the 52-year-old openly discusses the growing Oscar speculation since news broke about her being considered for a lead actress nomination. If she receives this nomination, she would be the first transgender actress to secure an Academy Award nomination.

Gascón opened up to The Hollywood Reporter, sharing her thoughts as interpreted by a translator, along the sun-kissed coast of Spain, explaining why she prefers the spotlight solely on her acting skills.

She stated at Hotel Maria Cristina that victory is up to you; if you won’t win it, you simply won’t. I can only showcase my work, and if luck favors me, it would be delightful as an actress – a role I value highly. It bothers me when people believe they are bestowing the award on account of your community, not for your performance.

She went on to say: “I focus on ensuring that what transpires relates to my acting abilities, as everything else lies beyond my influence. I’m not being falsely humble, but the part I played is one that only a select few could have pulled off.

She acknowledged the significance of her community and herself within it, but emphasized that her primary role was action. She hoped that her actions would carry the same importance.

Gascón expressed his admiration for France and Audiard, praising them for producing a Spanish film that is up for an Oscar nomination. He was astonished by the openness of the French towards his work and the broader Latin American culture.

Gascón stated that the French deeply value their own language and culture, considering themselves unique. He found it astonishing that a French production team could create a film in Spanish, featuring characters from Latin America. In his opinion, for a French director and crew to handle such a project is truly remarkable.

Gascón discussed in depth with THR the unique bond formed, their journeys to this project, and the transformative impact it’s having on both Saldana and Gomez.

Emilia Pérez’s movie will be showcased at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, taking place from September 20th to 28th. Check out The Hollywood Reporter‘s review of the film as well as their praise for Gascón here. (Paraphrased)
