Karla Sofia Gascón has resumed her acting career following the buzz generated by her Academy Award-nominated performance in “Emilia Perez“, which was a central topic during the previous award season.
The magazine, Hollywood Reporter, offers an exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming 19th-century Spanish western movie, Trinidad, helmed by directors Laura Alvea and José Ortuño, starring Gascón.
(I used “helmed” to mean directed, and “offers an exclusive sneak peek at” to convey the idea that they are showcasing the first look of the movie.)
A movie shot in the Canary Islands over the past few months primarily takes place in the United States. The film, titled “Trinidad’s Westward Journey,” stars Gabriela Andrada in the lead role. Trinidad is a Spanish woman who escapes persecution and embarks on a journey to the American frontier. Throughout her voyage, she gains recognition for her exceptional marksmanship abilities but also finds herself pursued by adversaries like the widow Bronson, portrayed by Gascón.
The actress portrays her character as a highly traditional woman, resembling a female version of Darth Vader, with the responsibility of nurturing and orchestrating five offspring.
Gascón states to THR that she strongly dislikes immigration, despite being an immigrant herself, and holds traditional, male-dominated beliefs. She’s not a supporter of feminism or progress, yet she’s known for her fighting spirit and has earned the admiration, as a woman, from those who are rooted in deceit. Essentially, she embodies a female version of Darth Vader.
The creators of the 12-million-dollar film were familiar with Gascón’s work, as she had gained international fame and become a strong contender for the Oscar for Best Actress through her role in Emilia Perez. However, her chances diminished significantly when old, contentious tweets from the actress resurfaced, causing controversy.
Silvia Carvalho da Costa, founder of ISII Group, who’s supporting the project, stated that it felt almost symbolic to her for the actress to take on the role of a villain next. She made this choice based on her bilingual abilities, the intensity she brings to her performances, and the character’s need for an ambiguous energy.
Carvalho da Costa considered the dispute regarding Gascón before casting her in the movie, expressing, “Each of us can be a hero in one person’s tale, while being seen as a villain by another.
The producer notes: “I’ve come to know Karla well. Beyond her exceptional acting skills, she is an outstanding individual in my eyes, and this personal aspect overshadows any previous disputes.
Regarding Gascón, she’s focused on moving forward following the uproar during the Oscars season. The actress explains: “I can’t dictate how people perceive me or the statements they make, which are frequently twisted out of context, manipulated, or just untrue. What I can control—and will continue to do so—is to show, through my actions in my work and daily life, that I am not the person some have tried to portray.
Distribution plans for the project will be announced at a later date.
