Originally, Kartik Aaryan, Janhvi Kapoor, and Lakshya were planned for Dostana 2, but the production was halted. However, there are signs that the project may be re-started. Sreeleela, currently co-starring with Kartik in Anurag Basu’s romantic drama, is rumored to take over Janhvi’s role in the Dostana sequel. As for the male leads, it seems Vikrant Massey could lead the film, with Lakshya potentially remaining involved as well.
Based on a recent report from News18 Showsha, the plot of Dostana 2 will stay consistent with its original plan, but there have been adjustments in both the cast and the director. According to their sources, it’s being considered that Sreeleela might take over Janhvi Kapoor’s role as the female lead.
The creators of Dostana 2 opted for a new cast, intending to present actors who haven’t acted together before. It’s intriguing to imagine their on-screen dynamics with each other,” stated the informant.
Initially, Colin D’Cunha was expected to direct the movie. But according to recent updates, it seems likely that Advait Chandan will take over as director instead. The production is planned to start sometime between September 2025 and early 2026.
Previously, it was disclosed by Mid-day that there could be a reboot of Dostana 2. They mentioned that Lakshya will continue as a cast member, and Vikrant Massey appears to be the strongest candidate to take over the role from Kartik Aaryan.
Presently, Kartik Aaryan and Sreeleela are filming an as-yet-unnamed romantic drama under the direction of Anurag Basu. In a promotional video for the film, Kartik appears with a rough appearance, disheveled hair, and a long beard. He’s depicted strumming a guitar on stage and singing the song “Tu Meri Zindagi Hai” from the movie Aashiqui.
The movie is set to have a spectacular premiere on Diwali 2025, where it’ll face competition from Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s horror-comedy universe film, Thama, which is also due for release around the same time.
