As a seasoned gamer with an eclectic taste for both video games and fashion, I must say that the Kartik Research x Baracuta capsule collection has truly piqued my interest! Being a history buff, I’ve always been drawn to stories that weave together the rich tapestry of different cultures and eras, much like this collaboration does with its unique dual narrative.
At this year’s eagerly awaited Paris Fashion Week appearance by Kartik Research, creative director Kartik Kumra seized the spotlight not only for the debut but also to announce a fresh partnership with the British label Baracuta. These collaboration pieces, showcased alongside the luxurious Fall/Winter 2024 collection, have now been released globally, blending their unique heritages in the presentation.
Kartik Research has always found significance in narrating India’s historical past, and this tradition continues with their latest partnership. In this collaboration, they delve into the grandeur of the British Raj era, harmoniously blending it with the vibrant, contemporary styles of the West. This fusion creates a distinctive dual narrative for Baracuta’s Northern Soul brand. By skillfully using designs, tailoring techniques, and details that are emblematic of both brands, they present a six-piece capsule collection demonstrating how seemingly disparate tales can be intertwined through mutual respect for craftsmanship.
Of course, the iconic G9 coat, a mainstay in the British brand’s collection, takes center stage in the latest release. Over time, it has undergone numerous updates, and this time around, it features intricate floral beadwork created using the ancient Zardozi method. The inside of the black jacket showcases Baracuta’s Fraser tartan lining, preserving its distinctive colors but made by local craftspeople using traditional handlooms instead.
In a fresh, more daring design, the square-shaped G4 figure is being revamped. The entire look, from the high collar reminiscent of a dog to the yoke resembling an umbrella, is covered in a unique patchwork quilt with intricate paisley patterns sewn by hand. This adds a rugged and unpolished vibe to the collection. Additionally, the outerwear is enhanced with three inner layers such as a shirt and trouser set adorned with Zardozi embroidery, along with another hand-stitched hoodie.
Throughout the capsule, clothing adopts a color scheme featuring greens, blues, and reds. The traditional colors of Baracuta are incorporated into the Kartik Research realm with a softer, naturally-dyed interpretation, giving off an air of antiquated treasures.
