Kate Winslet on Her Eight-Year-Journey to Bringing ‘Lee’ to Life

Kate Winslet on Her Eight-Year-Journey to Bringing ‘Lee’ to Life

As a gamer who has witnessed countless narratives unfold across various platforms, I must say that Lee’s story resonates deeply with me – not just as a tale of resilience and courage, but also as an example of how art can transcend boundaries and shed light on the darkest corners of humanity.

On April 30th, 1945, as Hitler took his own life in his Berlin hideout, Lee Miller snapped a self-portrait, posing nude in a bath tub, within the vacant apartment once occupied by the Fuhrer in Munich.

In my gaming world, as I progress through the narrative of “Lee: The Photographic Odyssey,” I find myself nearing the climactic chapter. This biopic, masterfully crafted by Ellen Kuras, offers a captivating glimpse into the life of the fearless and uninhibited photojournalist, Elisabeth “Lee” Miller. In this immersive experience, I step into the role of Kate Winslet, navigating through the highs and lows of Lee’s life, baring witness to her daring exploits and vulnerable moments.

Lee appeared unexpectedly in Winslet’s life following her purchase of a table that once belonged to Roland Penrose’s sister. As Winslet delved deeper into the story of this mysterious figure, she found herself captivated and determined to bring it to the big screen with the assistance of Lee’s son, Antony Penrose.

The show ran on for more than eight years. On occasion, Winslet took care of the costs for the entire team – cast and crew – for a fortnight straight.

Beyond her on-screen portrayal of Lee, Kate Winslet played a significant part in assembling the film’s cast, reaching out to acting contemporaries like Andy Samberg, Alexander Skarsgård, and Marion Cotillard. The talented crew, comprising esteemed professionals such as cinematographer Pawel Edelman (known for “The Pianist”), production designer Gemma Jackson (renowned for “Game of Thrones”), and costume designer Michael O’Connor (noted for “Jane Eyre”) worked tirelessly to preserve the film’s authenticity. They paid meticulous attention to every detail, even reconstructing accurately the original clothing worn by Miller.

1907 saw the birth of Lee Miller in New York City. Following a stint modeling for publications like Vogue and Vanity Fair, she delved into photography, learning her craft in Paris under Man Ray before establishing her own studio. A pivotal moment in her life arrived when she met Roland Penrose in Cairo. This encounter led her to London where she took up the role of a war correspondent for British Vogue, providing the public with a rare and poignant account of war and human hardship.

During World War II, it’s the particular phase of her life that Lee concentrates on, where she made a significant impact with striking photographs and artistic depictions, earning her a prominent place among the key influencers in 20th-century photography.

Kate Winslet’s performance as Lee is generating significant award speculation, and the Academy Award-winner has already secured a Golden Globe best actress nomination for this role. She recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter Rome to discuss the challenges of producing an independent film and the inspiration she draws from Lee Miller’s story as a woman thriving in a world predominantly ruled by men.

Why did you feel it was important to share Lee Miller’s story now, given that you learned the movie took eight years to produce and you had to cover two weeks of salaries for the whole team because of financial struggles?

Lee Miller, a trailblazing woman, significantly shaped the visual narratives about the Nazi regime’s truths through her work. Pioneering in her field as one of the first female photojournalists, she navigated the challenging male-dominated landscape with tenacity. Her captivating images, which bear witness to the silent sufferings of conflict victims, are priceless and continue to shed light on hidden truths today.

From your perspective, considering the advancements since World War II, what aspects do you think are still needed to achieve complete female empowerment?

80 years ago, Lee Miller was revolutionizing the concept of femininity, a transformation we women embrace fully today. Instead of fragility and submissiveness, she embodied resilience, strength, bravery, perseverance, and empathy. Her impact is significant: it influences how we raise our daughters, shapes our friendships, and informs our personal relationships. Remarkably, she carried out this transformation with integrity and poise, leaving me in awe. I found her courage to step from behind the camera and become the iconic voice for victims’ stories particularly inspiring. I believe her boldness was crucial, as without her, we might not have the kind of journalism that allows us an intimate look into the hidden aspects of society.

Lee managed to attend and participate; her purpose was indeed significant to her as she showed up to fulfill a crucial role. No matter the circumstances, she remained steadfast, refusing to retreat or abandon her post. Instead, she persisted, choosing to stay rather than leave. She had the option to go home, but she chose not to. I believe we should draw inspiration and leadership from individuals like her. She was an exceptionally courageous figure, and it was a great honor to share her story with others.

Previously, you portrayed a woman from WWII in ‘The Reader’. Over time, how has your approach to character development evolved?

day by day, I find myself growing more appreciative and passionate about my work. It consistently lifts my mood and brings me immense pleasure. My philosophy has always been to excel at what I do or not participate at all – a principle that I hold dear. This sentiment guides me more frequently as I strive for excellence in my work, to be a valuable team player, and to maintain positive relationships with my colleagues. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to continue working in this industry, having been an active member for 32 years now. It’s incredible and I feel incredibly fortunate.
