Kate Winslet Reveals Offensive 'Advice' She Received on the Set of Her New Film

As a dedicated cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of Hollywood over the past few decades, I can’t help but admire Kate Winslet‘s unwavering commitment to authenticity and body positivity. Her latest role in “Lee” is yet another testament to her courage and conviction.

Renowned actress Kate Winslet, winner of an Oscar, has consistently championed authentic and empowering representations of women in the film industry. However, she was disheartened to find that progress is still needed when she encountered an incident on the set of her latest movie ‘Lee’. In a chat with Harper’s Bazaar UK, Kate shared that a crew member offered unsolicited advice about concealing supposed flaws on her body, specifically suggesting she should try to hide her ‘belly rolls’ whenever she wore a bikini.

The movie, set during World War II, narrates the authentic tale of Elizabeth “Lee” Miller, a fashion model who transformed into a war correspondent and combat photographer, documenting the war in Europe. As Winslet recounts, a suggestion about her stance from one of the crew members ended up being more offensive than constructive. She shared with the media:

In this scene, Lee is casually seated on a park bench while wearing a swimsuit. During breaks in filming, one of the team members approached her and suggested she might want to sit up more upright. However, Lee made it clear that her choice to show her belly rolls was intentional – she wanted it to be part of her character’s appearance.

Winslet opted against following the advice given to her, as she aimed to depict Miller as a genuine woman instead of an idealized model on screen. To achieve this, she intentionally stopped working out prior to filming, allowing for a more authentic physique. This method has become a defining characteristic of her career since Titanic, and has earned her recognition as one of Hollywood’s most respected and celebrated actresses. She now proudly accepts her appearance as she grows older, choosing not to conceal it.

It is my life on my face, and that matters. It wouldn’t occur to me to cover that up.

Last year, the movie titled Lee debuted at the Toronto Film Festival, and while reviews have been somewhat scarce, they’ve generally been favorable, with a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes thus far. Andy Howell of Film Threat praised it in his review as being “beautiful, bold, and enigmatic, much like all remarkable works of art.” You can find Jericho Tadeo’s positive take on the film for MovieWeb by clicking here.

In addition to Lee, the film features Alexander Skarsgård, Andy Samberg, Marion Cotillard, Josh O’Connor, and Andrea Riseborough. This movie is directed by Ellen Kuras, who was nominated for an Oscar in 2009 for her documentary “The Betrayal”. The screenplay is adapted from the biography written by Antony Penrose.

48-year-old Winslet has spent a significant part of her career advocating for authentic representations of women in media. In an interview with Harper’s, she stated, “People understand not to comment on my wrinkles… I feel more self-assured as I grow older, which helps me disregard others’ opinions.”

In the movie titled “Lee“, she chose to portray her character without clothing, a choice she found challenging. She opted not to prepare for the role physically, embracing her “natural” physique. She openly expresses that the courage it took to reveal her body in its most unaltered state was considerable, stating, “I had to be exceptionally bold to let my body show its softest self and refrain from hiding its imperfections.”

As reported by Deadline, Kate Winslet has been vocal about challenging unrealistic beauty standards for women. Back in 2003, she spoke out against GQ magazine for digitally altering her cover photo, stating, “I don’t look like that, and what’s more, I don’t want to look like that.” In 2015, while serving as a model for L’Oréal, Winslet made sure her contract included a clause prohibiting the manipulation of her images through photoshop.

Lee
opens in theaters on September 27, 2024.
