Katy Perry Addresses Backlash Over Working With Dr. Luke on New Album After Kesha Lawsuit

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can relate to Katy Perry’s situation in many ways. Just like how she collaborates with different producers to create her music masterpieces, game developers team up with artists and designers to bring their games to life.

Katy Perry is voicing her thoughts about the criticism she faced for collaborating with Dr. Luke on her latest album

On the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, the singer was questioned about Lukasz Gottwald’s role in her forthcoming sixth album. The singer faced backlash for deciding to collaborate with Gottwald, who had been embroiled in a nine-year legal dispute with Kesha Sebert (also known as Kesha), following her claims of being drugged and sexually assaulted. She sought to break her recording contract. However, Gottwald denied the allegations and counter-sued for defamation and breach of contract. Their disagreement was finally resolved last June, just weeks before the trial was due

“Perry made it clear that while collaborating with him sparked numerous discussions, he was just one among many collaborators Perry worked with. However, it’s important to note that the ideas for these songs originated with Perry himself. The truth is, these songs are a reflection of Perry’s personal journey through life and this transformation, with the other individual serving as a facilitator in the process – a writer, a producer among many others. In essence, Perry is expressing his own experiences.”

Previously, Perry worked with Gottwald on popular songs like “I Kissed a Girl,” “California Gurls,” and “Teenage Dream.” However, for her latest album, the recently released tracks “Woman’s World” and “Lifetimes” were jointly written and produced by Dr. Luke

“When referring to ‘Woman’s World,’ she expressed a profound sense of empowerment, particularly as a mother and a woman. The act of giving birth, of creating a new life, a new brain, a new heart – it’s an incredible feat she accomplished, one she continues to do. She remains a matriarch, deeply rooted in this role, and her words reflect that perspective. Her latest work was created in collaboration with various associates, many from her ‘Teenage Dream’ era.”

The “Woman’s World” music video has received criticism as an outdated take on creating a feminist anthem, claims Billboard. In a video posted on her social media, Perry seems to address the criticism and offer insights into the making of the video

“Perry explained that they’re intentionally being somewhat sarcastic and exaggerated in their approach, as it’s quite slapstick. The theme of the male gaze is clearly present, yet they ironically claim to not be about it. They’re deliberately overemphasizing this aspect because it’s a sort of prelude; a prelude for Perry, serving as a refreshing change and a new perspective on feminine divinity. After this phase, we venture into an entirely different world.”

“She stated that the intention was to create a polished, pop-star caliber video, and that’s exactly what was achieved.”

Perry’s new album 143 releases on Sept. 20.
