Keanu Reeves Demands Changes for ‘Constantine 2’ Amid Action-Packed Scripts!

Despite appearing to have a clear vision and a strong motivating factor for the first time in its extended history, the future of DC films remains somewhat chaotic. Although James Gunn is nearly ready to debut his first live-action DC Universe movie with “Superman,” several previously planned movies are less certain than they once were, and the franchise’s “Elseworlds” spin-offs are experiencing turbulence. One of these projects is the long-anticipated sequel to the 2005 film, which is still facing a challenging path – as hinted by a recent update from Peter Stormare, who starred in the original movie.

It’s been 20 years since Keanu Reeves first brought the troubled demonologist to life on screen, yet efforts to continue the story have repeatedly stalled during production. Despite this, John Constantine has made appearances elsewhere, such as in The CW’s Arrowverse and a short-lived TV series. Still, many fans eagerly await Reeves reprising his role, and fortunately, it seems that he is the one responsible – for positive reasons. As reported by The Direct, actor Peter Stormare shared:

The conversation involves a lot of back-and-forth, primarily because I believe Keanu Reeves, whom I’m quite familiar with, isn’t too thrilled about the scripts that typically come from studios. This is due to the fact that the original movie didn’t do well initially but later turned into a cult classic, and now it’s one of the biggest cult movies out there. However, when it comes to making a sequel, the studios are insisting on action-packed scenes with cars flying in the air, people doing acrobatics, and intense fighting sequences.

In simpler terms, Keanu Reeves expresses that “John Wick” was a spiritual film featuring both demons and ordinary people, and he wanted to preserve this essence for the movie. During our conversation, I proposed an idea where God appears in a black suit resembling Lucifer from the original film. Given that it’s been 12 years since the first movie, it will be challenging to perfectly mimic its style, but Keanu seems interested in creating a sequel that closely follows the tone of the original film.

Stormare further mentioned that while he hasn’t read any of the scripts himself, Reeves’ commitment to making the film closely resemble the original source material resonates with him as well.

Instead of focusing on delving deeper into character development, this film seems to be transitioning towards an action-packed style, reminiscent of a typical action movie. The creator may desire to reprise his role as Constantine, maintaining the authenticity from the initial film. It’s taken time for this film to gain cult status, and it appears that this approach worked well with the audience. There’s no need to overload it with action sequences and gunfights; other movies serve that purpose. Avoid transforming it into a high-budget Marvel production with constant flying scenes and excessive violence. Keep it simple and true to its original essence.

The scripts for the action sequences are merely rumors from him, and he seems to be rather secretive about them. Just as my colleague and I have suggested, if we were to remake the first movie with some additional components, we would have a sequel. ‘The Godfather Part 2’ is an example of a sequel that expanded upon its predecessor. They share similarities, and when viewed together, they complement each other well. Therefore, it’s important not to stray too far from the original concept, or else the story may fall apart. That appears to be where we stand at this point.

Will ‘Constantine 2‘ Actually Happen?

Discussions about a follow-up to the movie “Constantine” have been ongoing for roughly 15 years now. The original director, Francis Lawrence, has long been considered as a potential returnee to the series alongside his main cast members. However, throughout the years, Guillermo del Toro was planning to revive Constantine on-screen through a “Justice League Dark” project, and J.J. Abrams was set to introduce a new television series centered around the character. When both of these projects were abandoned, focus shifted once more towards the prospect of Reeves’ version of the character resurfacing in another film. In 2022, Reeves himself confirmed that he had held talks with James Gunn regarding the sequel’s development. Since then, there have been limited updates until earlier this year when Reeves mentioned that he and director Lawrence had submitted a screenplay to DC Studios for review.

It’s possible that Reeves has settled on a script he’s satisfied with since his last conversation with Stormare, suggesting that progress might be made at last. Under any circumstances, it appears as though the long-awaited sequel, Constantine 2, could be edging closer than ever before.
