Keanu Reeves Doubts His Knees Could Take Another Action-Packed ‘John Wick’ Movie

As a long-time devotee of cinema, I’ve seen my fair share of action movies and the John Wick franchise has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on me. The news about Keanu Reeves‘ reservations regarding his physical ability to continue portraying John Wick is certainly concerning for fans like myself. However, let’s not forget that age is just a number when it comes to action heroes – look at Liam Neeson, Sylvester Stallone, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who are still kicking ass in their sixties and beyond!

The future of the franchise appears to hinge not so much on Reeves’ shoulders, but rather on his aching knees – those worn-out knees of his. Despite the enthusiasm from action franchise enthusiasts for Reeves to reprise his role as the canine-loving assassin, the actor himself harbors doubts, questioning if his body will be able to meet the rigorous physical requirements of the part.

The John Wick series is set to be in the hands of Ana de Armas for the 2025 release of From the World of John Wick: Ballerina (though it’s unlikely anyone will refer to it by that lengthy title). This spinoff film revolves around de Armas’ character, assassin Eva Macarro, who is seeking vengeance for the murder of her father and was schooled in the customs of the Ruska Roma organization. The movie also stars Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Norman Reedus, Anjelica Huston, Lance Reddick, and Keanu Reeves reprising his role as John Wick.

In an interview with CBS News, it was revealed that there was less enthusiasm about the possibility of Reeves reprising his role as the lead in another film from the franchise.

“I might not be able to perform in ‘John Wick’ again, as my knees are currently protesting. However, my heart is still up for the task; I just need to see if my knees will cooperate.

How Likely is Another ‘John Wick’ Sequel?

The fourth installment of John Wick, titled John Wick: Chapter 4, seemingly concluded with the apparent demise of its protagonist, leading fans to believe that the film series might be drawing to a close following this intense four-part narrative climax. Contrary to these assumptions, both Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski expressed doubts about a fifth movie immediately after the release of Chapter 4. Additionally, Reeves had stated earlier that he would not entertain the idea of another sequel unless Stahelski was in charge first.

To be honest, I couldn’t imagine making a ‘John Wick’ movie without Chad Stahelski. It would be intriguing to see how it turns out, but for me, it seems fitting that John Wick achieves some tranquility.

Nonetheless, there’s a slim hint of another John Wick adventure on the horizon, though it’s still considered unlikely. Clarity comes from remarks made by Stahelski in October, suggesting that a fifth John Wick film wouldn’t merely be a money-making venture. He stated:

Keanu and I are always ready to seize an opportunity if a great idea comes up the next day. We’re absolutely committed to this. If we feel there’s still something left to offer our fans without misleading them, we’d certainly do it tomorrow. However, at the moment, I don’t have that ability.

The upcoming film titled “Ballerina” marks the first project within the “John Wick” series since the controversial TV event series, “The Continental.” With rumors about the movie’s quality causing delays in its release to 2025, Stahelski, now a producer, and director Len Wiseman have refuted these claims. The fate of the franchise beyond “Ballerina” will be determined once the film hits theaters on June 6, 2025.
