In a new installment, the debated documentary series titled “Ancient Apocalypse” is coming back on Netflix, with actor Keanu Reeves joining the team this time around. In this season, journalist Graham Hancock will delve into finding proof that a highly advanced civilization existed on Earth thousands of years ago and was subsequently lost in time, dating back more than 10,000 years. His investigation takes him to various locations across the Americas, including New Mexico, Peru, Brazil, as he seeks groundbreaking discoveries.
In 2022, this series first made its appearance, and now, with Reeves on board, we anticipate increased audience interest. Hancock, who has previously been a guest on Joe Rogan’s podcast, shares his views there. In a short preview clip, Reeves hinted to Hancock about his long-standing suspicion that the timeline was skewed, which might account for his involvement in this exploration. Hancock, as reported by Deadline, has harbored this fascination for quite some time, and his quest leads him to the Americas because he sees it as a promising, unexplored region.

Although it’s what he yearns for, Hancock’s advocacy of his concepts has caused quite a commotion. His concept of a misplaced civilization, in particular, has been fiercely criticized, with some scientists going so far as to brand it a hazardous form of unscientific thinking.
Ancient Apocalypse Is Controversial in the Scientific Community
This show, which first appeared on Netflix in 2022, didn’t quite reach the viewership of other popular shows, but still managed to secure a second season due to its performance. However, it has faced significant criticism from the scientific community regarding its accuracy. The Society for American Archaeology petitioned Netflix to categorize the series as science fiction, arguing that there is no substantial evidence supporting Hancock’s theories, as expressed in an open letter sent to Netflix.
“After more than a century of professional archaeological investigations, we find no archaeological evidence to support the existence of an “advanced, global Ice Age civilization” of the kind Hancock suggests. Archaeologists have investigated hundreds of Ice Age sites and published the results in rigorously reviewed journals. The assertion that Ancient Apocalypse is a factual “docuseries” or “documentary” rather than entertainment with ideological goals is preposterous. If there were any credible evidence for a “global Ice Age civilization” of the kind Hancock suggests, archaeologists would investigate it and report their findings with rigor according to the scientific methods, practices, and theories of our discipline.”
Moving a step forward, an article by The Guardian labeled the series as “the most risky show on Netflix” in 2022. Previously, the series faced challenges with its filming locations due to objections raised by Indigenous groups over their portrayal in the series. However, the show has been granted permits for filming in Arizona and New Mexico, despite ongoing protests from local communities.
