Keanu Reeves Reveals Details on ‘Good Fortune’ Set Injury That Caused Knee to Crack Like Potato Chip

As a massive fan of Keanu Reeves, I can’t help but be in awe of his resilience and dedication to his craft. The latest addition to his list of impressive feats is his ability to fracture his kneecap while filming for “Good Fortune” and yet continuing with the production despite the injury.

Keanu Reeves shared new information about the traumatic incident that resulted in his kneecap shattering into pieces, similar to a crushed potato chip.

On Monday night, The Late Show played host to a seasoned actor as he sat across from Stephen Colbert. This esteemed guest came to discuss his latest project, “The Book of Elsewhere,” a collaborative novel penned with China Miéville. During the conversation, topics shifted to Reeves’ recent role in Aziz Ansari’s upcoming Lionsgate comedy, Good Fortune. It was while filming this project that Reeves sustained an injury to his kneecap, an incident Ansari disclosed during a CinemaCon appearance in April.

During a filming session with Aziz Ansari and Seth Rogen, we found ourselves in a cold plunge. I relished the chill, standing there, until we completed the scene. Afterward, as we were all shivering, I attempted to quickly put on my bathing suit and towel before leaving the room. In the process, I did what people do when they’re freezing – the “cold shuffle.” Unfortunately, in this particular room, which had protective carpets, there was a small hidden pocket near where I stepped. My foot got caught in it while I was shuffling, causing me to lose my balance and fall awkwardly, with my knee remaining upright as I tumbled down.

The actor, who pushed his physical boundaries numerous times filming the action-packed “John Wick” series, admitted he couldn’t prevent a fall. “My arms went out to break the fall,” he explained, “but my knee gave way despite its efforts due to previous damage. I landed hard, and my kneecap took the brunt of the impact, shattering like a crisp potato chip.”

His knee quickly became swollen, Reeves added with a chuckle, “Comedy isn’t easy, you know.”

In this version of the story: Ansari portrays a man experiencing hardships, trying to survive with odd jobs. He eventually encounters Jeff, portrayed by Rogen, a wealthy man living in a luxurious mansion complete with cars, a pool, an underground disco, and extravagant parties. Ansari assists Jeff with various tasks, including pool repair and shaman consultation for a spiritual journey. However, his fortunes take a turn when his car is towed from Denny’s parking lot. To his astonishment, he meets Gabriel, played by Reeves, who appears to lend a hand and teach him the essence of life.

At CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Ansari commended Reeves for his resilience and determination in filming despite a fractured kneecap that required the use of crutches. The comedian-turned-writer and director expressed admiration, stating, “What a trooper! He really is an angel, putting up such a brave front for all his other roles.”
