This year’s installment of the Edinburgh International Film Festival will welcome acclaimed British director Ken Loach along with his frequent artistic partners, screenwriter Paul Laverty and producer Rebecca O’Brien.
On August 20th, the three-member team is scheduled to talk about their critically acclaimed movies they’ve produced jointly over the years, such as Palme d’Or winners “The Wind That Shakes The Barley” (2006) and “I, Daniel Blake” (2016). Afterward, they will unveil a unique retrospective screening of “The Wind That Shakes The Barley“, which features Cillian Murphy, as confirmed by the festival in 35mm format.
The EIFF’s In Conversation segment will showcase various notable filmmakers, including director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland, Touching the Void, One to One: John & Yoko), who will chat about their careers with his brother, producer Andrew Macdonald (Trainspotting, Civil War, 28 Years Later). Additionally, Kevin Macdonald will screen The Cranes are Flying from 1957.
Nia DaCosta will delve into her distinguished body of work, encompassing indie films, horror sequels, and blockbuster comic book adaptations such as The Marvels, Candyman, and the upcoming film 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. She’ll unveil a pristine 4K restoration of Doug Liman’s ’90s black comedy, Go, according to EIFF.
This year’s lineup of speakers includes director-producer pair Ben Wheatley and Andy Starke (known for “Kill List,” “Bulk,” and “Sightseers”), as well as Andrea Arnold, who gained prominence with her 2024 Cannes film “Bird.
Jeremy Thomas (notable for “Eureka,” “13 Assassins,” and “Sexy Beast”) will make an appearance in Edinburgh, Scotland to talk about his illustrious career that features collaborations with directors like Nicolas Roeg, Takeshi Miike, and Jonathan Glazer. This discussion will be led by filmmaker Mark Cousins (known for “A Sudden Glimpse of Deeper Things,” “The Story of Film,” and “The Storms of Jeremy Thomas”). Thomas will initiate a special 35mm screening of Nicolas Roeg’s “Bad Timing” (1980), one of his early works.
The Edinburgh International Film Festival is set to take place from August 14-20, 2025. As announced by the CEO and festival director Paul Ridd, Ken Loach, Paul Laverty, and Rebecca O’Brien will grace us with their presence for an engaging and thought-provoking conversation about their collaborative work. With two Palme D’Or awards under their belts and a diverse portfolio of films spanning several decades, their discussion is sure to be intense and insightful.
We’re equally excited to screen one of their significant films, ‘The Wind That Shakes the Barley,’ from a 35mm print. It’s truly exciting to announce that this esteemed group will join our list of speakers at EIFF for an In Conversation series, which already features Jeremy Thomas, Nia Da Costa, Andrew and Kevin Macdonald, Andrea Arnold, and Ben Wheatley.
