As a woman who has always been fascinated by history and stories of resilience, I am absolutely thrilled about Netflix’s upcoming biopic, “The Six Triple Eight.” Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams is an inspiring sight to behold, embodying the spirit of a woman who fought not just one, but two wars – racism and sexism.
In the trailer for Netflix’s “The Six Triple Eight,” produced by Tyler Perry, Kerry Washington portrays a captain giving an inspiring speech to the unique Women’s Army Corps unit of color who fought overseas during World War II – the first and only such unit to do so.
As I stand here, gazing out at our assembled troops, I declare with conviction: “This is our journey, and we won’t falter.” The 855 of us, strong Black women and women of color, follow the orders of Major Charity Adams, ready to step aboard a ship that carries us to our battle.
They aimed at clearing an accumulated pile of mail from the past three years – a total of 17 million letters – that hadn’t been sent to soldiers serving overseas, with the goal of boosting spirits among the troops stationed on the battlefront.
The Netflix film, titled The Six Triple Eight, is a tribute to the 6888th battalion, who demonstrated bravery by conquering discrimination while efficiently completing their mail-sorting tasks ahead of time. The movie is based on Kevin M. Hymel’s article “Fighting A Two-Front War” published in WWII History Magazine, and it marks Perry’s fourth collaboration with Netflix.
The movie’s summary reveals it is based on the unique Women’s Army Corps unit of color who served overseas during WWII. Facing both racial prejudice and gender discrimination, as well as challenging work environments, they remained steadfast in their dedication to serving their nation with honor and respect. Assigned an exceptional task and bonded by their resolve, these unsung heroines brought hope and broke down barriers.
Apart from Washington, the main cast features Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonuga, Moriah Brown, Jeanté Godlock, Jay Reeves, Jeffery Johnson, Baadja-Lyne Odums, Donna Biscoe, Gregg Sulkin, Scott Daniel Johnson, Susan Sarandon, Dean Norris, Sam Waterston and Oprah Winfrey, in addition to Washington.
Nicole Avant, Angi Bones, Tony L. Strickland, Keri Selig, Carlota Espinosa, and Perry jointly serve as the project’s producers, with Peter Guber and Washington holding executive producer roles.
The Six Triple Eight will be shown in selected cinemas starting from December 6, and it will become available for streaming on Netflix from December 20.
