Kevin Bacon’s Shocking Death in The Bondsman: You Won’t Believe How It Happens!

Warning: If you haven’t watched at least the first episode of ‘The Bondsman‘ on Amazon Prime yet, the following information may contain spoilers.

In a follow-up to his crime drama “City on a Hill” on Showtime, Kevin Bacon ventured back into the supernatural realm for the fresh horror-comedy “The Bondsman”. This show is non-stop laughs and unique compared to any other TV series in 2025. It’s one of the standout streaming premieres this week, but be warned: it starts off with quite a shock – Hub Halloran, played by Bacon, has his throat slit open in the opening scene. This grisly event is not a dream sequence!

In contrast to most shows that usually introduce their main characters before they perish, the unconventional series “The Bondsman” doesn’t follow this pattern. Although it’s hinted in the synopsis that Hub is a bounty hunter who comes back from the dead to hunt down evil demons and send them to Hell, this bold beginning is still unexpected. Given this unusual start, I was curious about the decision to kill off Kevin Bacon so brutally early on when I interviewed showrunner Erik Oleson. Here’s what he shared with me:

As a cinephile, I crafted an opening sequence that serves as an immersive introduction for our audience. This initial scene not only introduces Hub Halloran, the character portrayed by Kevin, but also provides a glimpse into various elements that will define our upcoming show. Prepare to laugh, gasp in shock, witness bloodshed, and feel the warmth of heartfelt moments. It’s going to be an emotional rollercoaster ride!

It’s clear to those still following the series that the showrunner is focusing on the deep, familial feelings and emotions portrayed, not in a literal sense of heart parts. Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that anything is possible in the world of this show.

Previously, Erik Oleson held the position of showrunner for the third and final season of Netflix’s “Daredevil”, among other projects. This experience made him quite adept at creating intense, morally ambiguous scenes with a high level of violence. Following his work on that series and “Carnival Row” for Prime Video, he now serves as the creative lead for the sequential seasons. For his latest project, “The Bondsman”, Oleson aimed to shock viewers from the very beginning, as he shared with me.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I crafted the climax of that initial sequence in our pilot with an aim to leave viewers slightly bewildered, perhaps exchanging puzzled glances and uttering something like, “Wow, what on earth is this series?” That’s why I carefully structured it that way.

As I settled in to watch the premiere of “The Bondsman,” I was well-prepared for its narrative, yet I was still startled by how swiftly the town’s ominous side was unfolded. If the rest of the episode had continued at that same dark, gritty, and unyielding pace, I might not have hesitated. But fortunately, as new characters like Beth Grant’s Kitty, Jennifer Nettles’ Maryanne, and Damon Herriman’s Lucky were introduced, the world transformed into something brighter, more playful, and warmer.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but wonder if “Hub’s performance” would have been as captivating without the subtly powerful energy that Kevin Bacon brings to the table. During our conversation, Erik Oleson spoke highly of the actor, and it’s clear why. Watching Bacon navigate through larger-than-life scenarios, whether solo or with his family, is an experience not to be missed. In essence, he encapsulates the essence of Hub in a way that makes every moment on screen feel authentic and engaging.

It’s amusing to imagine this character being thrust into an unusual predicament and responding casually with something like, “Ah, a demon. Alright, let’s get moving then.” The humor lies in watching him craft his own equipment to tackle the demon, which is quite unexpected. Including his mother in the storyline, such as using her as a weapon or aid, makes one wonder – what kind of series dares to do that? But it’s intriguing, isn’t it?

This is the sole program where you witness Kevin Bacon bandage his grimy neck injury with duct tape, followed by having duct tape shipped directly to your home. Let’s hope it’s for much more pleasant circumstances.
