Kevin Costner Reacts to His Yellowstone Fate: 'Maybe It's a Red Herring'

As a longtime admirer of Kevin Costner‘s illustrious career, I must say that his portrayal of John Dutton in Yellowstone was nothing short of mesmerizing. The man has graced our screens with iconic roles for decades, and John Dutton will undoubtedly be added to that list. However, the recent turn of events regarding his character’s departure from the series left me a bit bewildered.

Warning: Major SPOILERS for Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 below!

After many conversations about whether Kevin Costner would depart from Yellowstone, the outcome for his character John Dutton has been disclosed. The Taylor Sheridan-created neo-Western series is currently in its fifth and final season, with the initial episodes having been aired more than a year ago. With Costner no longer part of the popular Paramount+ show, viewers were curious to see how the program would bid farewell to the acclaimed actor’s character. Now, we finally know what happened, and so does Costner himself, who expressed his thoughts on the revelation during an interview on SiriusXM’s The Michael Smerconish Program (although he first mentioned that he didn’t even realize Yellowstone was airing the previous night).

“I’ve been surprised to see ads featuring my image everywhere recently, and I thought, ‘This can’t be me.’ It turns out that the ad I saw yesterday was from a season I’m not even part of. I only found out about it this morning when someone mentioned that it aired last night.

In the gripping second half of Season 5, I found myself reeling as the storyline unfolded in the episode titled “Desire All You Need.” The shocker? John Dutton, our beloved family patriarch, was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound. While whispers hinted at the possibility of suicide, it soon became clear that this was no tragic accident, but rather a calculated move by Sarah Atwood (played skillfully by Dawn Olivieri), who is entangled in a romantic web with John’s son, Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley). When asked about his thoughts on the character’s demise, Costner expressed:

“I didn’t see it. I heard it’s a suicide. That doesn’t make me wanna rush to go see it.

They’re pretty smart people. Maybe it’s a red herring. They’re very good. They’ll figure that out.”

As a movie review enthusiast, I must admit that I, along with many other viewers, found Sunday night’s episode of “Yellowstone” a bit disappointing in regards to the handling of Costner’s character. The sudden demise of John Dutton left some fans questioning the creative choice made by the writers. Some have even expressed their dissatisfaction, stating they might not complete the series, while others believe that Costner deserved a more fitting farewell.

The missing element was integral to the conclusion. This wasn’t something unexpected or required to be changed; it was pre-planned in the narrative of the tale. The outcome was inevitable, it merely unfolded in a slightly altered manner.

In the face of fan backlash over John Dutton’s demise in Yellowstone, praise for Kelly Reilly’s exceptional portrayal in “Desire All You Need” has surfaced. Although Reilly hasn’t received an Emmy nod for her outstanding performance on the series thus far, speculation is rife that this may be the season she finally receives recognition. Twitter user @KristenK1874 expressed, “Many viewers have declared they won’t watch Yellowstone anymore given how John Dutton was written off. As a devoted fan of characters, I understand. But Kelly Reilly’s performance is worth sticking around for this season.” Another user, @itscolton696969, chimed in, “Kelly Reilly delivers a powerhouse performance as Beth Dutton. She is a testament to acting mastery. Her work was evident in Eden Lake. Sixteen years later, she’s still captivating audiences on Yellowstone. In tonight’s episode, her performance was nothing short of phenomenal.

The departure of Costner from the hit series Yellowstone made waves in May, and shortly after, it was revealed that the show’s fifth season would mark the end of its neo-Western run. The final episode of Yellowstone is scheduled for December 15, 2024. Although the storyline involving the Dutton Ranch will come to a close, there’s a possibility that viewers may continue to follow the journey of beloved characters Beth and Rip (Cole Hauser).
