Kevin Hart and Robin Roberts Production Companies Sign on to Produce New Orleans Doc ‘A King Like Me’

As a gamer with a deep appreciation for documentaries that delve into the heart of communities, I am truly excited about the upcoming release of “A King Like Me”. The story of the Zulu Krewe and their resilience in the face of adversity is one that needs to be told and celebrated.

On Tuesday, I got excited to learn that my beloved production company, Highly Flammable Productions, has enlisted the incredible talents of Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat Productions and Robin Roberts‘ Rock’n Robin Productions for executive production on the New Orleans documentary titled “A King Like Me“. What a fantastic collaboration!

Last week, “A King Like Me” premiered in New Orleans and was selected as the opening film for the 35th Annual New Orleans Film Festival. This movie focuses on the Zulu Krewe, a significant cultural group based in Louisiana with more than 800 Black male members, who suffered the loss of 16 of their own due to COVID-19 after the 2020 Mardi Gras festivities. According to a press statement, the film delves into the effects of the pandemic on this resilient cultural organization and sheds light on the health disparities in the United States that are closely linked with race as a result of this tragic loss.

Producer Fisher Stevens expressed great excitement as Hartbeat and Rock’n Robin Robin joined the team for this project. He is deeply appreciative of their assistance in highlighting the rich history and significance of Black culture during Mardi Gras, and in bringing to light the tales of resilience, fortitude, and unity within the Zulu Club.

The documentary presents a contemporary depiction of Black camaraderie, leadership, and community resilience amidst global pandemic, Hurricane Ida, member losses, and gun violence, as stated in the supplementary information. By exploring the history of The Zulu Club, it highlights how Black people and Black culture have significantly impacted New Orleans and our country as a whole.

Director Matthew Henderson expressed how incredible it feels to have Hartbeat and Rock’n Robin backing him on this project,” he said, further explaining that the documentary “embraces and highlights the complexities and subtle aspects of the African-American life in America.
