As a gamer who grew up in the 90s, Kevin Smith‘s movies were more than just films – they were time machines that transported me back to my college days, a period filled with endless laughter, camaraderie, and a shared love for cinema. The mere mention of “Mallrats” takes me back to the dorm rooms where my friends and I would gather around the VHS player, rewinding and replaying scenes from this underrated gem.
Many people find certain films to be significant markers or milestones in their personal lives. Perhaps there was a movie you watched on an evening when something important occurred, or a collection of movies that you shared with friends, which evoke fond memories. For me, the early works of Kevin Smith always take me back to my college years, and wow, it suddenly struck me that college was quite some time ago, because “Mallrats” feels like it’s as old as dirt.
Kevin Smith recently had a mini-Mallrats reunion at a fan convention where he appeared with hetero-lifemate Jason Mewes alongside Brodie Bruce himself, Jason Lee. In the post on Instagram, Smith mentions that Mallrats is on the verge of turning 30 years old, which is insane and can’t be possibly be right because I can’t possibly be that old.

Indeed, it’s correct. The film “Mallrats” was initially released in 1995, so its 30th anniversary will fall in 2025. Notably, this was a year following Smith’s debut directorial effort with the critically acclaimed indie movie “Clerks.” However, despite being a significant chance for Smith to collaborate with a major studio, “Mallrats” turned out to be a massive flop in cinemas.
In time, it gained a cult following when it was found on VHS tapes by students like me and my college friends during our freshman year. That was the year I first watched both _Clerks_ and _Mallrats_. We rented these movies repeatedly throughout that entire academic year and beyond.
To put it simply, those films, particularly “Chasing Amy,” ignited my passion for cinema and led me to where I am today – writing about movies as a profession. My friend, inspired by Kevin Smith, even penned a screenplay that was reminiscent of our college days. Though it wasn’t exactly Oscar-worthy, it certainly brought us plenty of laughter.
It’s been almost three decades since my college days, yet it feels hard to accept. Frankly, I feel too young for that to be true, but alas, I am indeed that age. Just two years ago, I attended Kevin Smith’s tour for “Clerks III” and reminisced about the past with a college friend from those days. The passage of time has made that era seem much more distant than it did back then.
In his post, Smith doesn’t discuss the possibility of a future “Mallrats 2”. Despite the director expressing interest in the project multiple times, there is reportedly a script for “Mallrats 2” that he has mentioned. At one point, it seemed like “Mallrats 2” was moving forward, but then Smith experienced a minor, potentially life-threatening heart attack. As a result, he changed direction and made “Clerks III”, a film inspired by his heart attack experience instead.
As a gamer, I’m not quite sure where things stand with the much-anticipated sequel to “Mallrats,” titled “Twilight of the Mallrats.” It might still be in the works, but the release date remains shrouded in mystery for now.
