The long-awaited Netflix series Khakee: The Bengal Chapter has now been released, starring Prosenjit Chatterjee, Jeet, and Ritwik Bhowmik in significant roles. This Neeraj Pandey-created production is set in West Bengal during the early 2000s and focuses on crime and power struggles. Ritwik, who plays Sagor Talukdar, has spoken about his dramatic character transformation for this role. He described it as a significant shift from his past characters and an examination of the darker aspects of human nature.
In a chat via Zoom, Ritwik mentioned that the role he’s playing now is unlike anything he’s portrayed before, using the phrase “This part is radically different from any character I’ve played.” He also shared that his co-star, Aadil Zafar Khan, finds himself in a similar predicament, as they both have been linked to characters known for their upstanding and well-mannered personas.
In his own words, Ritwik Bhowmik mused over the experience, stating, “We plunged into the grim reality, not only of Kolkata but also of humanity itself. This was a profoundly psychological, emotional, and physical journey. Yet, we found pleasure in the process.
As a devoted follower in the realm of acting, I can attest that chances to delve into intricate characters aren’t always abundant, especially when one is frequently tied to a specific persona. However, I am deeply thankful for this opportunity to depart from my previous roles and embrace the demanding complexity of this fresh character.
He continued to elaborate on the significant impact that Bengali artists – encompassing technicians, performers, scriptwriters, and musicians – have had on Indian cinema over time. Notably, Bengal boasts a rich narrative tradition that permeates through various artistic domains like music, dance, visual arts, and film production.
Ritwik continued to underscore how Bengali culture significantly shaped cinema, pointing out that Punjabi culture became more prominent in the late 80s and 90s. He commended OTT platforms for bringing attention to regional tales, stressing the importance of telling powerful stories that transcend language limitations.
He emphasized that the film “Khakee: The Bengal Chapter” can be watched in both Hindi and Bengali, thereby underscoring the robust connection between Bengali artists and Bollywood, and expressing optimism for an increased presence in the entertainment world.
In another rendition: Khakee: The Bengal Chapter is about IPS officer Arjun Maitra fighting against crime and political deceit. It features Jeet, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Saswata Chatterjee, and Ritwik Bhowmik, debuting on Netflix on March 20th. Shital Bhatia is the producer of this series that offers a suspenseful storyline revolving around justice and power conflicts.
