Khel Khel Mein: UAE fans disappointed over local censorship chopping off Fardeen Khan’s character's sexuality part; director calls it ‘heartbreaking’

As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for cinema and its role in reflecting societal changes, I find the censorship of Akshay Kumar-led “Khel Khel Mein” in the UAE particularly disheartening. I’ve seen firsthand how movies can foster dialogue, challenge norms, and bring about change. The removal of crucial scenes, such as Fardeen Khan’s sexuality sequence, not only alters the narrative but also denies audiences the full impact of the film’s powerful message.

The movie “Khel Khel Mein,” starring Akshay Kumar, has been released globally in cinemas, but with additional censorship applied in the UAE. This has left fans in that region puzzled, as they allege that significant portions of the comedy have been removed, including a scene involving Fardeen Khan’s portrayal of his sexuality. One fan expressed their disappointment to Mid-day, stating, “I was excited to watch this film due to its progressive narrative. We need more stories like these, not fewer.”

A supporter based in Dubai noted that alterations made by the UAE Media Regulatory Office significantly shifted the portrayal of Fardeen’s character within the movie. “It’s disappointing to witness such a pivotal scene being removed. I was taken aback when I learned about this from Indian cinema-goers. Such censorship deprives viewers of fully appreciating the film’s strong message,” the fan commented.

Multiple sources indicate that not only has the climax-related storyline involving Fardeen Khan’s character been significantly reduced by local authorities, but also substantial portions of the narrative have been removed. It’s peculiar to note that even a common dialogue like “Your thoughts about my 10-year-old daughter are better than mine” has been cut out as well.

The portal contacted Mudassar Aziz, the movie’s director, regarding censorship issues. He replied, “It’s unfortunate that something so pertinent and executed with such grace couldn’t be screened in UAE, but I’m elated by the appreciation I’m receiving worldwide for those specific scenes.”

On the contrary, Fardeen Khan expressed that his character in Khel Khel Mein aims to stimulate a meaningful and pertinent discussion. He emphasized that although adjustments might have been made, the underlying purpose of the role – promoting acceptance – remains constant, and he strongly supports the significance of this message.

In a twist of fate, Khel Khel Mein focuses on a group of seven companions whose hidden truths unfold during a spirited game night. This hilarious production features actors such as Taapsee Pannu, Vaani Kapoor, Ammy Virk, Pragya Jaiswal, and Aditya Seal. However, the anticipation among UAE fans is dampened due to significant cuts in Fardeen’s scenes, marking his long-awaited return to the silver screen after a 14-year hiatus. At present, you can catch this movie in cinemas near you.
