Kieran Culkin Reveals Why His Kids Haven't Watched Macaulay Culkin's Home Alone Yet, And As A Parent I Totally Get It

As a parent who has been there and done that (or at least watched), I can understand Kieran Culkin’s hesitation to introduce his young kids to Home Alone. With my own little ones, I remember the days when every creaking floorboard or sudden noise sent them running for cover. The tarantula scene? Nightmare fuel for a 3-year-old! And let’s not forget about those bumbling burglars who could easily be mistaken for real-life intruders in their overly dramatic antics.

The holidays have arrived, signaling the perfect time for families to snuggle up and enjoy classic Christmas films. For many, “Home Alone” is a must-watch, but it seems that Kieran Culkin’s family movie night might not include this film just yet. Despite starring in one of the ’90s best movies alongside his real-life brother Macaulay Culkin, Kieran recently shared that his children, Kinsey (5) and Wilder (3), haven’t been exposed to their uncle Mac’s famous escapades. As a parent myself, I can understand his decision completely.

Kieran shared with E! News at the Gotham Awards that while some consider the adventure vacation movie a favorite holiday flick, it’s too action-packed for his kids to enjoy.

There’s still some scary parts; for the three-year-old, it’s the tarantula. There’s like the guy at the end who said, ‘I’m gonna bite off all your fingers.’ That’s scary for a three-year-old.

As a parent, it’s hard not to agree.

Home Alone offers lots of chuckles and cozy holiday feelings, but it also contains scenes that, viewed from a child’s perspective, could appear disturbing. Children such as Macaulay Culkin are still learning the distinction between fiction and reality. Consequently, a tarantula on someone’s face or a burglar menacingly threatening harm might seem less like amusing scenes from one of the 90s best comedies and more like terrifying nightmares.

Kieran Culkin Reveals Why His Kids Haven't Watched Macaulay Culkin's Home Alone Yet, And As A Parent I Totally Get It

Speaking of it, the actor who played the role of “Father of the Bride” hasn’t completely ruled out sharing the family-turned-Christmas tradition with his children in the not so distant time. He hinted playfully.

We think they might be ready for Home Alone this year…. Or maybe next year.

It’s wise for parents to take a careful approach when introducing the film at an appropriate age, ensuring it brings joy rather than becoming too intense. Also, delaying until the children are old enough to resist creating dangerous traps at home seems sensible. Nobody would want the actor from “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” accidentally getting hurt because the kids couldn’t tell the difference between film action and real life.

The charm of holiday film customs comes from crafting those memorable, joyful instances. You aspire for your children to chuckle at Kevin McCallister’s witty schemes and cheer him on as he outwits the clumsy burglars – not find themselves scared beneath a blanket due to Harry and Marv’s darker menaces.

Though his brother, Macaulay Culkin, seems to have already shown the film “A Real Pain” to his 3-year-old son Dakota, its star appears hesitant for now. In a recent 2023 interview with ET, Macaulay shared that his son found the movie hilarious and convinced him he was in it as well.

Apart from everything else, it’s worth mentioning that for Kieran Culkin, the movie “Home Alone” holds more significance than being simply a beloved family film—it’s a piece of his family’s past. The film’s unprecedented success catapulted Macaulay Culkin to global stardom, a situation that the actor from “Fargo” has expressed he wouldn’t have preferred as a child. Therefore, introducing this movie to his children might not only be about waiting for the right age, but also about allowing them to experience it as an innocent holiday adventure, devoid of its fame-related context.

If Macaulay Culkin’s siblings must bide their time to witness Kevin McCallister fighting against Harry and Marv, you don’t have to wait! You can watch all the Home Alone films by subscribing to Disney+.
