Kill Bill Fans Rejoice: Both Volumes Are Coming to Hulu This February!

As a die-hard cinephile, I can hardly contain my excitement! The masterful works of Quentin Tarantino are soon to grace our screens, and not just one but two of his iconic films. Yes, you heard it right! “Kill Bill: Volume 1″ and “Kill Bill: Volume 2” will be available on Hulu starting February 1st. Get ready to immerse yourself in the intricate world of Uma Thurman’s legendary character, The Bride, once more.

Tarantino’s martial arts epic is set to be added among movies like Nomadland, Sleeping With the Enemy, and Taken on a streaming platform owned by Disney. It’s not often that you get an opportunity to watch a double feature from one of today’s most influential filmmakers on screen.

In “Kill Bill: Volume 1,” the story unfolds around an unidentified woman who regains consciousness from a four-year coma. She recalls that she was once a bride-to-be preparing for a small Texas chapel wedding. However, tragedy struck when her past associates arrived at the scene, massacred everyone present, and her former boss and lover were the ones who shot her.

In her quest for vengeance against those responsible for the death of her infant, she meticulously compiles a list of targets to track down, with Bill being the last name on the list. “Kill Bill: Volume 2” unfolds as a sequel to the original tale, with the Bride relentlessly pursuing her enemies and gradually whittling down her list. The shocking revelation at the end of the first movie is that her baby, who was believed to have been killed, is in fact Bill’s daughter and is still alive.

In 2003, I found myself drawn to the cinemas for the release of the first “Kill Bill” film. It marked Quentin Tarantino’s well-earned hiatus after his masterpiece, “Jackie Brown,” in 1997. This project had long been a simmering idea in the director’s mind, stemming from our collaboration on “Pulp Fiction.” With Uma Thurman by my side, we shared the vision that the character of “The Bride” was too compelling to exist only within the confines of a single role. We both believed she deserved her own movie.

Tarantino’s style often revolved around crafting a story about a woman seeking revenge on a list of individuals she wanted to eliminate as part of an epic retribution campaign. This narrative structure is reminiscent of his creation, “Inglourious Basterds,” which centers on a young Jewish girl who embarks on a mission to track down and kill Nazis who had murdered her family during World War II.

Quentin Tarantino believed that the concept he had initially envisioned for Shosanna would suit “Kill Bill” better, as he shared during his interview with Charlie Rose in 2009 (through Hollywood). In essence, Tarantino stated that “almost all the qualities I admired about Shosanna, I transferred to The Bride.

Kill Bill is a contemporary blend of Westerns and martial arts movies, created as a tribute to the films that significantly influenced him. Inglourious Basterds was developed a bit later.

Is ‘Kill Bill’ Tarantino’s Best Film?

It makes little sense to watch just one volume without the other; they are essentially two parts of the same story, though you can consider them separate movies if you prefer. When viewed together, Kill Bill becomes Tarantino’s most impressive work. However, not everyone shared that view in 2003.

Quentin Tarantino is often admired by the Academy Awards. He’s been nominated multiple times in both Best Director and Best Original Screenplay categories, and he has won two Oscars for screenwriting: one for “Django Unchained” and another for “Pulp Fiction,” which he co-wrote with his friend from the Video Archives, Roger Avary.

In a different phrasing, when it was time to honor Kill Bill, the Academy declined. One can only guess that they may have disliked the movie being divided into two separate parts, even though the tones of these chapters vary significantly from one another.
