As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds, experiencing stories of courage and resilience through fictional characters, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of admiration for real-life heroes like Kimberly Williams-Paisley. Her two-year ordeal with a voice disorder, which left her unable to speak above a whisper, is a testament to the indomitable human spirit.
Kimberly Williams-Paisley is opening up about enduring a medical ordeal for two years.
In an article for People magazine released on Wednesday, the star of “Father of the Bride” and Brad Paisley’s wife disclosed that in late 2022, her ability to speak above a whisper was lost due to a voice disorder, which persisted for two years.
Williams-Paisley expressed that she felt confined within her own self, carrying a tremendous burden of embarrassment. She felt overlooked or unseen. Consequently, she declined acting opportunities and distanced herself from those dear to her.
In a subsequent discovery, Reese Witherspoon found out that she had a partial paralysis affecting her left vocal cord. To rectify this issue, she underwent surgery. Reflecting on the experience, she stated, “I had to struggle to make my voice heard. Now, irrespective of how my audible voice sounds, the strength within me resonates more profoundly. I feel more self-assured. I understand myself better.
Reflecting on when her vocal troubles first surfaced, Williams-Paisley reminisced about an instance during a charity event, the Dance Party to End ALZ, in November 2022. This event paid tribute to their late mother who suffered from dementia. As she stood before the crowd, Williams-Paisley shared, “When I went up on stage, I attempted to speak into the microphone, but there was nothing that emerged. It was a chilling experience.
At first, she believed she had just overused her voice and required “a hot cup of tea and some vocal rest.” However, despite the passage of weeks, she could barely whisper, which made it clear that there was an underlying issue. She started to criticize herself, thinking, “I must be breathing incorrectly, or perhaps I’m not utilizing my vocal training properly.” This self-criticism consumed her.
Instead of seeking assistance from a voice coach, acupuncture, or massage, she tried these methods but found no improvement after two months. During the debut of her Netflix movie “Dog Gone“, she confessed that she couldn’t engage in red carpet interviews because the noise level was too high for her voice to be clearly heard.
She shared that her voice betrayed her emotions, as she didn’t feel weak inside. She retreated to the restroom where she wept, and a few companions offered comfort by holding her hand. Later, she dealt with recurring bouts of anxiety and daily feelings of melancholy.
In early 2023, she scheduled a visit at the Vanderbilt Voice Center, where they revealed that her neck muscles were excessively tight, making her vocal cords barely noticeable. This condition was identified as muscle tension dysphonia. Williams-Paisley explained that her neck muscles were unknowingly contracting to facilitate her vocal cords coming together.
Williams-Paisley often relied on physical therapy to help her body loosen up. A specialist also worked with her to readjust her body alignment and provided a nighttime mouthpiece to ease the tension in her muscles. Even when her voice didn’t come back, the actress questioned if she might have lost it permanently: “There were times I mourned deeply and cried. I wondered, ‘Who am I without my voice?’
After considering other options, Reese Witherspoon (Williams-Paisley) eventually opted for surgery, specifically a three-hour treatment called medialization laryngoplasty. During this operation, her underperforming left vocal cord was shifted nearer to the right one. Post-surgery, her voice regained its normal quality.
As I’m still getting better, I have to admit that my voice isn’t quite as strong as usual. After a lengthy day filled with chatter, it might sound a bit gravelly.
With her growing vocal prowess, Reese Witherspoon’s sister, Williams-Paisley, will be taking on the role as host for the upcoming fourth season of the Fox reality dating show, “A Farmer Seeks a Spouse.
Now, I feel like I’ve been given a newfound strength,” I expressed, “I’m compelled to speak up about what matters, and I don’t want to squander the power of my words. So here I am, mustering the courage to use them boldly.
