Fifteen years have passed since “King of the Hill,” the animated Texas-based sitcom produced by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, concluded its initial broadcast, yet it seems that the show’s impact and popularity continue to expand. The enduring character of Hank Hill (portrayed by Judge himself) and his caring but quirky family have offered a comforting touchstone for longtime viewers, while fresh audiences discovering the series on streaming platforms appreciate Hank and his companions’ unwavering decency amidst the upheaval in American politics and society.
In intriguing fashion, the Hill family’s straightforward decency shines brightly amidst tumultuous periods. However, as we anticipate the show’s comeback, the query lingers: Will Hank and his gang remain relevant in today’s world? How would he adapt to the modern times? What is his current setting, who did he cast his vote for, how have his opinions changed, and most crucially, does he retain significance as a symbol of reason and a sitcom legend?
The Hill family remains charming in tough times. But with the show returning, we wonder if Hank can still connect with our present-day world. How would he adjust to today’s society? Who did he vote for, what are his new views, and most importantly, is he still influential as a voice of reason and a sitcom icon?
At long last, Season 14 of “King of the Hill” is upon us, and it’s as if the show never went away. Maintaining its signature blend of intelligence, warmth, and unhurried pacing that endeared it to audiences initially, one of the finest sitcoms from the past quarter-century has made a triumphant return.
The show is back with a bang
Upon resuming, the Hills find themselves back home following their time in Saudi Arabia, and Hank is elated to be returning to Texas. He plans to embark on his retirement at the familiar house in Arlen alongside Peggy. However, it’s important to note that Arlen has changed during Hank’s absence, so he’ll have to adapt to new circumstances – though some aspects will remain constant.
In a very promising kickoff, the initial episode of the 10-episode series (shown early to critics before the official debut) primarily focuses on Hank exploring changes in his hometown such as bike lanes, revised city rules, altered businesses, and transformed neighborhoods, which he finds perplexing and annoying. However, “King of the Hill” exhibits its intelligence by not dwelling excessively on the “Grumpy Old Man Complaining About Nothing” aspect for long. Instead, after a comforting period of adaptation, the Hills quickly resume a familiar version of their lives, albeit with fresh challenges.
As a gamer, I can’t help but appreciate the clever approach of “King of the Hill” as a sitcom. It masterfully tackled contemporary American political and social issues, yet it never felt like a lecture or a treatise on societal or national matters. Instead, it focused on the personal struggles of Hank, Peggy, or Bobby, making the show relatable and engaging. This is what made it so emotionally fulfilling in the first place. In this revival, Judge and the team have managed to keep that same charm, delivering a fresh perspective on topics like cultural appropriation, veganism, and far-right masculinity grifters, all while maintaining the human touch that makes “King of the Hill” feel like the beloved series we’ve grown attached to.
The ensemble still shines
Instead of just Hank, Peggy, and Bobby being the main focus, remember that “King of the Hill” has always been about the broader community around the Hill family. Many familiar faces return in this new installment. Dale Gribble, previously voiced by Johnny Hardwick but now by Toby Huss, continues his role as a master of conspiracy theories. Bill Dauterive (Stephen Root) remains an emotional wreck, and Boomhauer (once more voiced by Mike Judge) is still the same old Boomhauer. Their dialogues remain witty, and their antics are just as intriguing, even though they’ve grown a bit older and have become even more peculiar.
In this new version of “King of the Hill”, the narrative skillfully distributes its storytelling riches among the diverse characters. Stories abound that delve into Bill’s social unease, Dale’s machinations, Peggy’s aspirations, and more, each thoughtfully exploring where they stand today. Previously, Hank grappled with being a good father, a morally upright businessman, and a competent husband. Now, he ponders how to fill his days in retirement, frets about the future when his health may fail, and of course, finds it challenging to tell his friends that he’s developed a liking for soccer. Simultaneously, Bobby is juggling love life and business matters, Peggy seeks to rediscover her zest, and every Arlen resident grapples with their unique challenges – all portrayed sensitively and joyfully by the cast, animators, and writers.
Restoring an old TV series is like walking a tightrope, requiring a delicate blend of the familiar with something fresh. Some shows venture too far into unknown territories and lose their way, while others try too hard to recapture past glory and end up stiff or forced. However, “King of the Hill,” upon its comeback, demonstrates an intelligent foresight of this challenge and primarily focuses on that exact predicament in its new season. Hank values the old ways, but he also realizes that clinging to them forever will lead to obsolescence. This dilemma creates engaging dramatic tension and humorous moments, while staying true to the original essence of the show. At its core, “King of the Hill” is about an ordinary man seeking the right path for himself and his loved ones amid a strange, unfamiliar world. Given this premise, we may need this show more than ever, and the new “King of the Hill” successfully delivers a remarkable reboot for one of the 21st century’s finest animated series.
“King of the Hill” returns on August 4 on Hulu.
